Las aventuras de Sherlock Holmes
The Adventure of the Blue Carbuncle
Capítulo 7, Página 5
"I
must
be
quite
dense,
but
I
can't
follow
you.
How
did
you
deduce
he
was
intellectual?"
Holmes
put
the
hat
on
his
head.
It
came
down
over
his
forehead
and
settled
on
his
nose.
"It's
about
cubic
capacity,"
he
said.
"A
man
with
such
a
large
brain
must
have
something
in
it."
"And
his
declining
fortunes?"
"This
hat
is
three
years
old.
These
flat
brims
with
curled
edges
were
in
style
then.
It's
a
hat
of
excellent
quality.
Look
at
the
ribbed
silk
band
and
the
fine
lining.
If
this
man
could
buy
such
an
expensive
hat
three
years
ago
and
hasn't
bought
another
since,
he
must
have
fallen
on
hard
times."
"That's
clear
enough.
But
what
about
his
foresight
and
moral
decline?"
Sherlock
Holmes
laughed.
"Here's
the
foresight,"
he
said,
pointing
to
the
small
disc
and
loop
of
the
hat-securer.
"These
aren't
sold
with
hats.
If
he
ordered
one,
it
shows
foresight,
as
he
took
extra
precautions
against
the
wind.
But
since
the
elastic
is
broken
and
he
hasn't
replaced
it,
he
shows
less
foresight
now,
indicating
a
weakening
character.
However,
he's
tried
to
hide
some
stains
on
the
felt
by
covering
them
with
ink,
which
shows
he
hasn't
lost
all
self-respect."
"Your
reasoning
seems
plausible."
"The
other
details—that
he's
middle-aged,
has
grizzled
hair,
recently
cut,
and
uses
lime-cream—are
all
found
from
closely
examining
the
lower
part
of
the
lining.
The
lens
reveals
many
hair-ends,
cleanly
cut
by
a
barber.
They
all
stick
together,
and
there's
a
distinct
lime-cream
smell.
This
dust
isn't
the
gritty,
grey
street
dust
but
the
fluffy
brown
house
dust,
showing
it's
mostly
been
indoors.
The
moisture
marks
inside
prove
he
sweats
a
lot,
so
he's
likely
not
in
good
physical
shape."
