Horner,
a
plumber,
was
accused
of
taking
it
from
the
lady’s
jewel-case.
The
evidence
was
so
strong
that
it's
going
to
the
Assizes.

He
searched
through
his
newspapers
until
he
found
one
and
read
a
paragraph:
"Hotel
Cosmopolitan
Jewel
Robbery.
John
Horner,

plumber,
was
charged

stealing
the
blue
carbuncle
from

Countess
of
Morcar's
jewel-case
on
December
22nd.
James
Ryder,
a
hotel
attendant,
testified
he
took
Horner
to
the
Countess's
dressing-room
to
fix

loose
grate
bar.
He
stayed
with
Horner
a
while
but
was
called
away.
On
returning,
Horner
was
gone,
the
bureau
was
forced
open,
and
the
jewel
casket
was
empty
on
the
dressing-table.
Ryder
raised
the
alarm,
and
Horner
was
arrested
that
evening,
but
the
stone
wasn't
found
on
him
or
in
his
rooms.
Catherine
Cusack,
the
Countess's
maid,
testified
she
heard
Ryder's
alarm
and
found
the
scene
as
described.
Inspector
Bradstreet
testified
about
arresting
Horner,
who
proclaimed
his
innocence.
Due
to
a
previous
robbery
conviction,
the
magistrate
referred
the
case
to
the
Assizes.
Horner
showed
intense
emotion
during
the
proceedings
and
fainted
at
the
end."
"Hmm,
so

for
the
police-court,"
said
Holmes
thoughtfully,
tossing
aside
the
paper.
"Now
we
must
figure
out
how
a
stolen
jewel
ended
up
in
a
goose's
crop
in
Tottenham
Court
Road.
Our

Here
is
the

from

goose,
which

from

and

and
