Las aventuras de Sherlock Holmes
The Adventure of the Speckled Band
Capítulo 8, Página 7
"Quite
so.
Please
continue
with
your
account."
"I
couldn't
sleep
that
night.
I
had
a
vague
feeling
that
something
bad
was
going
to
happen.
My
sister
and
I
were
twins,
and
you
know
how
close
the
bond
can
be
between
twins.
It
was
a
stormy
night.
The
wind
was
howling
outside,
and
the
rain
was
hitting
the
windows
hard.
Suddenly,
through
the
noise
of
the
storm,
I
heard
a
woman's
terrified
scream.
I
knew
it
was
my
sister's
voice.
I
jumped
out
of
bed,
wrapped
a
shawl
around
me,
and
ran
into
the
corridor.
As
I
opened
my
door,
I
thought
I
heard
a
low
whistle,
like
the
one
my
sister
had
described,
followed
by
a
clanging
sound,
as
if
metal
had
fallen.
As
I
ran
down
the
passage,
my
sister's
door
was
unlocked
and
slowly
swinging
open.
I
stared
at
it
in
horror,
not
knowing
what
might
come
out.
By
the
light
of
the
corridor
lamp,
I
saw
my
sister
appear
in
the
doorway,
her
face
white
with
fear,
her
hands
reaching
out
for
help,
her
whole
body
swaying
like
a
drunkard.
I
ran
to
her
and
held
her,
but
at
that
moment
her
knees
gave
way,
and
she
fell.
She
twisted
as
if
in
terrible
pain,
and
her
limbs
shook
violently.
At
first,
I
thought
she
didn't
recognize
me,
but
as
I
bent
over
her,
she
suddenly
screamed
in
a
voice
I
will
never
forget,
'Oh,
my
God!
Helen!
It
was
the
band!
The
speckled
band!'
She
seemed
to
want
to
say
something
else
and
pointed
towards
the
Doctor's
room,
but
another
convulsion
seized
her,
and
she
couldn't
speak.
I
ran
out,
calling
loudly
for
my
stepfather,
and
I
met
him
hurrying
from
his
room
in
his
dressing-gown.
When
he
reached
my
sister,
she
was
unconscious,
and
though
he
gave
her
brandy
and
sent
for
medical
help
from
the
village,
nothing
could
be
done,
and
she
died
without
regaining
consciousness.
That
was
the
dreadful
end
of
my
beloved
sister."
"One
moment,"
said
Holmes,
"are
you
sure
about
this
whistle
and
metallic
sound?
Could
you
swear
to
it?"
"That's
what
the
county
coroner
asked
me
at
the
inquiry.
I
strongly
believe
I
heard
it,
but
with
the
noise
of
the
storm
and
the
creaking
of
the
old
house,
I
might
have
been
mistaken."
"Was
your
sister
dressed?"
"No,
she
was
in
her
nightdress.
In
her
right
hand,
they
found
the
burnt
end
of
a
match,
and
in
her
left,
a
matchbox."
"This
shows
she
struck
a
light
and
looked
around
when
the
alarm
happened.
That's
important.
What
did
the
coroner
conclude?"
"He
investigated
the
case
thoroughly,
as
Dr.
Roylott's
behavior
was
well-known
in
the
county,
but
he
couldn't
find
a
satisfactory
cause
of
death.
My
evidence
showed
the
door
was
locked
from
the
inside,
and
the
windows
were
secured
by
old-fashioned
shutters
with
broad
iron
bars,
which
were
locked
every
night.
The
walls
were
carefully
checked
and
found
to
be
solid
all
around,
and
the
flooring
was
also
examined
with
the
same
result.
The
chimney
is
wide
but
blocked
by
four
large
staples.
So,
it's
certain
my
sister
was
alone
when
she
died.
Besides,
there
were
no
signs
of
violence
on
her."
