Las aventuras de Sherlock Holmes
The Adventure of the Engineer's Thumb
Capítulo 9, Página 16
"Then
suddenly,
in
the
silence,
I
heard
a
sound
that
made
my
heart
leap.
It
was
the
clanking
of
levers
and
the
swish
of
a
leaking
cylinder.
He
had
started
the
engine.
The
lamp
was
still
on
the
floor
where
I
had
left
it
while
examining
the
trough.
By
its
light,
I
saw
the
black
ceiling
slowly
descending
on
me.
Its
jerky
movement
was
relentless,
and
I
knew
it
would
crush
me
in
less
than
a
minute.
I
screamed
and
threw
myself
at
the
door,
scratching
at
the
lock
with
my
nails.
I
begged
the
colonel
to
let
me
out,
but
the
noise
of
the
levers
drowned
my
cries.
The
ceiling
was
just
a
foot
or
two
above
my
head,
and
when
I
raised
my
hand,
I
could
feel
its
rough
surface.
It
struck
me
that
the
pain
of
my
death
would
depend
on
my
position.
If
I
lay
on
my
face,
the
weight
would
hit
my
spine,
and
I
shuddered
at
the
thought
of
that
dreadful
snap.
Maybe
it
would
be
easier
the
other
way,
but
could
I
really
lie
there
and
watch
that
deadly
shadow
come
down
on
me?
I
was
already
unable
to
stand
upright
when
something
caught
my
eye
and
filled
me
with
hope."
"I
mentioned
that
while
the
floor
and
ceiling
were
iron,
the
walls
were
wooden.
As
I
glanced
around
in
panic,
I
noticed
a
thin
line
of
yellow
light
between
two
boards.
It
grew
wider
as
a
small
panel
was
pushed
back.
For
a
moment,
I
could
hardly
believe
that
this
was
a
door
leading
to
safety.
The
next
instant,
I
threw
myself
through
it
and
collapsed,
half-fainting,
on
the
other
side.
The
panel
closed
behind
me,
but
the
crash
of
the
lamp
and
the
clang
of
the
metal
slabs
moments
later
showed
how
narrow
my
escape
had
been."
"I
was
brought
back
to
my
senses
by
someone
frantically
pulling
at
my
wrist.
I
found
myself
lying
on
the
stone
floor
of
a
narrow
corridor,
with
a
woman
bending
over
me.
She
tugged
at
me
with
her
left
hand
while
holding
a
candle
in
her
right.
It
was
the
same
friend
whose
warning
I
had
so
foolishly
ignored."
"'Come!
Come!'
she
cried
breathlessly.
'They'll
be
here
any
moment.
They'll
see
you're
gone.
Oh,
don't
waste
time,
come!'"
"This
time,
I
took
her
advice.
I
staggered
to
my
feet
and
ran
with
her
down
the
corridor
and
a
winding
stair.
It
led
to
another
broad
passage,
and
just
as
we
reached
it,
we
heard
the
sound
of
running
feet
and
shouting
voices,
one
answering
the
other
from
our
floor
and
the
one
below.
My
guide
stopped,
looking
around
in
desperation.
Then
she
opened
a
door
leading
to
a
bedroom,
where
the
moonlight
shone
brightly
through
the
window."
"'It's
your
only
chance,'
she
said.
'It's
high,
but
you
might
be
able
to
jump.'"
"As
she
spoke,
a
light
appeared
at
the
end
of
the
passage,
and
I
saw
Colonel
Lysander
Stark
rushing
towards
us
with
a
lantern
in
one
hand
and
a
weapon
like
a
butcher's
cleaver
in
the
other.
I
dashed
across
the
bedroom,
flung
open
the
window,
and
looked
out.
The
garden
looked
so
peaceful
and
inviting
in
the
moonlight,
and
it
couldn't
be
more
than
thirty
feet
down.
I
climbed
onto
the
sill
but
hesitated
to
jump.
I
wanted
to
hear
what
happened
between
my
savior
and
the
man
chasing
me.
If
she
were
harmed,
I
was
determined
to
go
back
for
her.
The
thought
barely
crossed
my
mind
when
he
reached
the
door,
trying
to
push
past
her.
She
wrapped
her
arms
around
him,
trying
to
hold
him
back."
"'Fritz!
Fritz!'
she
cried
in
English.
'Remember
your
promise
after
the
last
time.
You
said
it
wouldn't
happen
again.
He
will
be
silent!
Oh,
he
will
be
silent!'"
