Las aventuras de Sherlock Holmes
The Adventure of the Engineer's Thumb
Capítulo 9, Página 2
I
picked
it
up
and
read:
“Mr.
Victor
Hatherley,
hydraulic
engineer,
16A,
Victoria
Street
(3rd
floor).”
That
was
my
visitor’s
name
and
address.
“I’m
sorry
to
have
kept
you
waiting,”
I
said,
sitting
down.
“You’ve
just
had
a
night
journey,
which
can
be
quite
dull.”
“Oh,
my
night
was
anything
but
dull,”
he
replied,
laughing
heartily.
His
laugh
was
loud
and
infectious,
but
it
set
off
my
medical
instincts.
“Stop
it!”
I
said.
“Pull
yourself
together!”
I
poured
some
water
from
a
carafe.
It
was
no
use.
He
was
caught
in
one
of
those
hysterical
fits
that
hit
strong
people
after
a
crisis.
Eventually,
he
calmed
down,
looking
exhausted
and
pale.
“I’ve
made
a
fool
of
myself,”
he
gasped.
“Not
at
all.
Drink
this.”
I
added
some
brandy
to
the
water,
and
color
started
to
return
to
his
cheeks.
“That’s
better!”
he
said.
“Now,
Doctor,
could
you
look
at
my
thumb,
or
rather,
where
it
used
to
be?”
He
unwrapped
the
handkerchief
and
showed
me
his
hand.
Even
my
experienced
nerves
shuddered
at
the
sight.
Four
fingers
protruded,
but
there
was
a
horrible
red,
spongy
area
where
the
thumb
had
been.
It
looked
like
it
had
been
hacked
or
torn
out.
