Las aventuras de Sherlock Holmes
The Adventure of the Engineer's Thumb
Capítulo 9, Página 20
"But
we
can't
all
be
wrong."
"Oh,
yes,
you
can.
This
is
my
point."
Holmes
placed
his
finger
in
the
center
of
the
circle.
"This
is
where
we'll
find
them."
"But
what
about
the
twelve-mile
drive?"
gasped
Hatherley.
"Six
miles
out
and
six
back.
It's
simple.
You
said
the
horse
was
fresh
and
glossy
when
you
got
in.
How
could
it
be
if
it
had
traveled
twelve
miles
on
rough
roads?"
"It's
a
plausible
trick,"
Bradstreet
noted
thoughtfully.
"There's
no
doubt
about
the
nature
of
this
gang."
"None
at
all,"
Holmes
replied.
"They're
large-scale
counterfeiters,
using
the
machine
to
create
an
amalgam
to
replace
silver."
"We've
known
for
some
time
that
a
clever
gang
was
active,"
said
the
inspector.
"They've
been
producing
thousands
of
half-crowns.
We
traced
them
to
Reading
but
couldn't
go
further,
as
they
covered
their
tracks
expertly.
But
now,
thanks
to
this
lucky
break,
I
think
we've
got
them."
However,
the
inspector
was
wrong,
as
those
criminals
were
not
meant
to
be
caught.
As
we
arrived
at
Eyford
Station,
we
saw
a
huge
column
of
smoke
rising
from
behind
a
small
group
of
trees,
hanging
like
a
giant
ostrich
feather
over
the
landscape.
