soon

boys
said

would
run

snoring
stopped.
They
walked
quietly,

the
other.
Tom
stepped
on
a
stick.
It
broke
with
a
loud
sound.
The
man
moved,
and
his
face
was
in
the
moonlight.
It
was
Muff
Potter.
The
boys
were
very
scared,
but
then
they
felt
okay.
They
walked
out
quietly.
They
stopped
a
little
far
away
to
talk.
Then
they
heard
a
long
howl.
They
turned
and
saw
a
dog
near
Muff
Potter.
The
dog
looked
at
the
sky.
"Oh,
no,
it’s
him!"
both
boys
said
together.
"Tom,
they
say
a
dog
howled
at
Johnny
Miller’s
house
two
weeks
ago.
A
bird
came
and
sang
that
night.
Nobody
is
dead
there
yet."
"I
know.
But
Gracie
Miller
fell
in
the
fire
and
got
hurt
the
next
Saturday."
"Yes,
but
she
is
not
dead.
She
is
getting
better."
"Wait
and
see.
She
will
not
get
better,
just
like
Muff
Potter.
