Her
hands
went
up.

book?"
A
thought
came
fast
to
Tom.
He
jumped
up
and
shouted,

it!"
The
school
looked
at
Tom.
They
did
not
understand.
Tom
stood
for
a
moment.
He
felt
confused.
Then
he
walked
to
his
punishment.
Becky
looked
at
him
with
surprise
and
thanks.
Her
eyes
made
him
feel
happy.
He
was
ready
for
the
punishment.
Mr.
Dobbins
hit
him
hard,
but
Tom
did
not
cry.
He
had
to
stay
two
hours
after
school.
But
he
knew
Becky
would
wait
for
him.
He
did
not
mind.
That
night,
Tom
went
to
bed.
He
wanted
to
get
back
at
Alfred
Temple.
Becky
told
him
everything.

felt
sorry
and
ashamed.
But
Tom
stopped
thinking
about
revenge.
He
thought
about
nice
things.
He
fell
asleep
with
Becky's
words
