Las aventuras de Tom Sawyer
Capítulo 30, Página 9
"When
did
you
last
see
him?"
Joe
tried
to
remember
but
was
not
sure.
People
stopped
leaving
the
church.
Whispers
spread,
and
everyone
looked
worried.
Children
were
asked
questions.
Young
teachers
too.
They
all
said
they
didn’t
see
Tom
and
Becky
on
the
ferryboat.
It
was
dark,
and
no
one
checked
if
anyone
was
missing.
One
young
man
finally
said
he
thought
they
were
still
in
the
cave!
Mrs.
Thatcher
fainted.
Aunt
Polly
cried
and
wrung
her
hands.
The
alarm
spread
quickly.
Bells
rang
loudly,
and
the
whole
town
was
awake!
The
Cardiff
Hill
story
was
forgotten.
Horses
were
saddled,
boats
were
ready,
and
soon,
many
men
went
to
the
cave.
All
afternoon,
the
village
was
quiet.
Many
women
visited
Aunt
Polly
and
Mrs.
Thatcher
to
comfort
them.
They
cried
with
them,
which
helped
more
than
words.
All
night,
the
town
waited
for
news.
In
the
morning,
the
message
was,
"Send
more
candles—and
food."
Mrs.
Thatcher
was
almost
crazy;
Aunt
Polly
too.
Judge
Thatcher
sent
messages
of
hope,
but
they
did
not
help
much.
The
old
Welshman
came
home
at
daylight,
tired
and
dirty.
He
found
Huck
in
bed,
very
sick
with
fever.
The
doctors
were
at
the
cave,
so
Widow
Douglas
took
care
of
Huck.
She
said
she
would
help
him
because
he
was
the
Lord’s
child,
and
nothing
from
the
Lord
should
be
neglected.
The
Welshman
said
Huck
was
good,
and
the
widow
said:
"You
can
trust
that.
It’s
the
Lord’s
mark.
He
never
leaves
it
off.
It’s
on
every
creature
he
makes."
In
the
morning,
tired
men
came
back
to
the
village,
but
others
kept
searching.
They
searched
parts
of
the
cave
no
one
had
visited
before.
Lights
moved
around
in
the
distance,
and
shouts
and
noises
echoed.
In
one
place,
far
from
the
usual
path,
the
names
"BECKY
&
TOM"
were
found
on
a
wall.
Near
it,
a
ribbon
was
found.
Mrs.
Thatcher
knew
the
ribbon
and
cried.
She
said
it
was
the
last
thing
from
her
child.
People
said
sometimes
a
light
would
shine,
and
men
would
shout
and
run,
but
the
children
were
not
there.
It
was
just
a
searcher’s
light.
Three
long
days
and
nights
passed
slowly.
The
village
was
sad
and
tired.
No
one
cared
about
anything.
Even
the
news
about
the
tavern
did
not
matter
much.
Huck,
feeling
a
bit
better,
asked
about
the
tavern.
