Las aventuras de Tom Sawyer
Capítulo 1, Página 7
In
two
minutes,
or
less,
he
forgot
his
troubles.
Not
because
they
were
small,
but
because
something
new
and
exciting
pushed
them
away.
Like
when
men
forget
their
problems
with
new
plans.
This
new
thing
was
a
special
way
of
whistling
he
learned
from
a
man.
He
wanted
to
practice
it.
It
was
a
bird-like
sound,
made
by
touching
the
tongue
to
the
roof
of
the
mouth
while
whistling.
The
reader
might
remember
how
to
do
it
if
he
was
ever
a
boy.
Soon,
Tom
learned
it
well,
and
he
walked
down
the
street,
whistling
happily.
He
felt
like
an
astronomer
who
found
a
new
planet.
As
far
as
pure
joy
goes,
the
boy
had
the
advantage,
not
the
astronomer.
The
summer
evenings
were
long.
It
was
not
dark
yet.
Tom
blew
his
whistle.
A
stranger
stood
in
front
of
him—a
boy
a
bit
bigger
than
him.
A
new
person
in
the
small
village
of
St.
Petersburg
was
a
big
deal.
This
boy
was
well
dressed,
even
on
a
weekday.
It
was
amazing.
His
cap
was
nice,
his
blue
jacket
was
new
and
neat,
and
so
were
his
pants.
He
wore
shoes—and
it
was
only
Friday.
He
even
had
a
bright
necktie.
He
looked
like
he
came
from
the
city.
Tom
felt
jealous.
The
more
Tom
looked
at
him,
the
more
he
disliked
his
fancy
clothes.
Tom’s
own
clothes
seemed
shabbier
and
shabbier.
Neither
boy
spoke.
If
one
moved,
the
other
moved
too—but
only
sideways,
in
a
circle;
they
kept
looking
at
each
other.
Finally,
Tom
said:
“I
can
beat
you!”
“I’d
like
to
see
you
try.”
“Well,
I
can
do
it.”
“No,
you
can’t.”
“Yes,
I
can.”
“No,
you
can’t.”
