Las aventuras de Tom Sawyer
Capítulo 17, Página 2
The
next
morning,
when
Sunday
school
ended,
the
bell
began
to
toll
instead
of
ringing.
It
was
a
very
quiet
Sunday,
and
the
sad
sound
matched
the
calm
around
them.
The
villagers
gathered,
stopping
in
the
entrance
to
whisper
about
the
sad
event.
Inside,
there
was
no
whispering,
only
the
sound
of
dresses
as
women
took
their
seats.
No
one
could
remember
the
church
being
so
full
before.
There
was
a
pause,
a
quiet
waiting,
and
then
Aunt
Polly
came
in
with
Sid
and
Mary,
followed
by
the
Harper
family,
all
in
black.
Everyone,
even
the
old
minister,
stood
until
the
mourners
sat
in
the
front
row.
There
was
more
silence,
broken
by
quiet
sobs,
and
then
the
minister
spread
his
hands
and
prayed.
A
moving
hymn
was
sung,
and
the
text
followed:
"I
am
the
Resurrection
and
the
Life."
As
the
service
went
on,
the
minister
talked
about
the
good
things
and
the
bright
future
of
the
lost
boys.
Everyone
there
felt
sad
because
they
hadn’t
seen
these
good
things
before.
The
minister
shared
touching
stories
about
the
boys’
lives,
showing
their
sweet
and
generous
nature.
People
now
saw
how
noble
those
stories
were,
but
at
the
time,
they
seemed
like
mischief
that
needed
punishment.
The
congregation
became
more
and
more
emotional
as
the
sad
story
continued,
until
everyone
joined
the
mourners
in
a
chorus
of
sobs.
Even
the
preacher
cried
in
the
pulpit.”
There
was
a
noise
in
the
gallery,
but
nobody
noticed.
A
moment
later,
the
church
door
creaked.
The
minister
raised
his
teary
eyes
above
his
handkerchief
and
stood
still!
One
pair
of
eyes
after
another
followed
his,
and
then
the
whole
congregation
rose
and
stared.
The
three
boys,
thought
to
be
dead,
were
walking
up
the
aisle—Tom
in
front,
Joe
next,
and
Huck,
in
ragged
clothes,
sneaking
at
the
back!
They
had
been
hiding
in
the
unused
gallery,
listening
to
their
own
funeral
sermon!
Aunt
Polly,
Mary,
and
the
Harpers
ran
to
their
loved
ones,
covering
them
with
kisses
and
saying
thanks,
while
poor
Huck
stood
shy
and
uncomfortable,
not
knowing
what
to
do
or
where
to
go
with
so
many
eyes
on
him.
He
started
to
leave,
but
Tom
grabbed
him
and
said:
"Aunt
Polly,
it’s
not
fair.
Someone
should
be
happy
to
see
Huck."
"And
so
they
shall.
I’m
glad
to
see
him,
poor
motherless
boy!"
Aunt
Polly’s
loving
attention
made
Huck
feel
even
more
uncomfortable.”
“Suddenly,
the
minister
shouted
loudly:
"Praise
God
from
whom
all
blessings
flow—sing!—and
put
your
hearts
in
it!"
And
they
did.
The
song
Old
Hundred
was
sung
with
joy,
and
while
it
filled
the
church,
Tom
Sawyer
the
Pirate
looked
at
the
other
kids
and
felt
this
was
the
proudest
moment
of
his
life.”
