Las aventuras de Tom Sawyer
Capítulo 28, Página 1
That
night
Tom
and
Huck
were
ready
for
their
adventure.
They
stayed
near
the
tavern
until
after
nine.
One
watched
the
alley,
and
the
other
watched
the
tavern
door.
Nobody
went
in
or
out
of
the
alley
or
the
tavern.
The
night
seemed
clear,
so
Tom
went
home.
If
it
got
really
dark,
Huck
would
come
and
"maow,"
and
Tom
would
sneak
out
to
try
the
keys.
But
the
night
stayed
clear,
so
Huck
stopped
watching
and
went
to
bed
in
an
empty
sugar
barrel
around
midnight.
Tuesday,
the
boys
had
no
luck.
The
same
happened
on
Wednesday.
But
Thursday
night
seemed
better.
Tom
left
early
with
his
aunt’s
old
tin
lantern
and
a
towel
to
cover
it.
He
hid
the
lantern
in
Huck’s
barrel
and
started
watching.
An
hour
before
midnight,
the
tavern
closed,
and
the
lights
went
out.
No
Spaniard
appeared.
The
alley
stayed
quiet.
Everything
seemed
perfect.
Darkness
was
everywhere,
and
only
distant
thunder
broke
the
silence.
Tom
got
his
lantern,
lit
it
in
the
barrel,
and
wrapped
it
in
the
towel.
The
two
boys
crept
toward
the
tavern.
Huck
stood
guard
while
Tom
went
into
the
alley.
Huck
waited
and
felt
worried.
He
wished
to
see
a
light
from
the
lantern.
It
would
scare
him,
but
at
least
he’d
know
Tom
was
okay.
It
felt
like
hours
since
Tom
left.
Huck
thought
maybe
Tom
fainted
or
even
died
from
fear.
Huck
moved
closer
to
the
alley,
scared
and
expecting
something
terrible.
He
breathed
in
tiny
amounts,
and
his
heart
raced.
Suddenly,
there
was
a
light,
and
Tom
ran
past
him.
“Run!”
Tom
said.
“Run
for
your
life!”
Huck
didn’t
need
to
hear
it
twice.
He
ran
fast,
like
the
wind.
They
didn’t
stop
until
they
reached
an
old
shed
at
the
village's
end.
Just
then,
a
storm
started,
and
rain
poured
down.
When
Tom
caught
his
breath,
he
said:
“Huck,
it
was
awful!
I
tried
two
keys
quietly,
but
they
made
noise.
I
was
so
scared
I
couldn’t
breathe.
They
didn’t
work.
I
grabbed
the
door
handle,
and
it
opened!
It
wasn’t
locked!
I
went
in,
took
off
the
towel,
and,
Great
Caesar’s
Ghost!”
“What!
What
did
you
see,
Tom?”
“Huck,
I
almost
stepped
on
Injun
Joe’s
hand!”
“No!”
