we
get
to
the
shore."

you'll
wait
a
long
time,
that's

Huck
started
to
leave
sadly,
and
Tom
watched
him,
feeling
a
strong
urge
to
swallow
his
pride
and
go,
too.
He
hoped
the
boys
would
stop,
but
they
kept
wading
away.
Suddenly,
Tom
realized
how
lonely
and
quiet
it
had
become.
He
struggled
with
his
pride
one
last
time,
then
ran
after
them,
shouting:
"Wait!
Wait!
I
want
to
tell
you
something!"
They
stopped
and
turned
around.
When
Tom
reached
them,
he
started
to
share
his
secret.
They
listened
quietly
until
they
understood
what
he
was
getting
at,
and
then
they
cheered
and
said
it
was
"splendid!"
They
told
him
if
he
had
shared
it
earlier,
they
wouldn't
have
left.
He
made
an
excuse
for
not
telling
them
sooner,
but
the
real
reason
was
he
feared
even
the
secret
might
not
keep
them
with
him
for
long,
so
he
saved
it
as
a
last
resort.
The
boys
happily
returned
and
started
playing
again
with
excitement,
talking
about
Tom's
amazing
plan
and
admiring
his
cleverness.
After
a
nice
meal
of
eggs
and
fish,
Tom
said
he
wanted
to
learn
to
smoke.
Joe
liked
the
idea,
too.
So
Huck
made
pipes
and
filled
them.
They
had
only
smoked
grapevine
cigars
before,
which
weren't
considered
manly.
They
lay
on
their
elbows
and
began
to
puff
carefully,
feeling
unsure.
The
smoke
tasted
bad,
and
they
gagged
a
bit,
but
Tom
said:
"Why,
it's
really
easy!
If
I'd
known,
I'd
have
learned
long
ago."
