Las aventuras de Tom Sawyer
Capítulo 18, Página 8
At
school,
the
children
admired
him
and
Joe
so
much,
giving
them
looks
full
of
praise,
that
the
two
heroes
quickly
became
too
proud.
They
started
telling
their
adventures
to
eager
listeners—but
they
only
started;
it
wasn’t
something
that
would
end
soon,
with
their
imaginations
providing
endless
material.
And
finally,
when
they
took
out
their
pipes
and
calmly
smoked,
they
reached
the
peak
of
glory.
Tom
decided
he
didn't
need
Becky
Thatcher
anymore.
Glory
was
enough
for
him.
Now
that
he
was
famous,
maybe
she
would
want
to
make
up.
Let
her
try—he
would
show
her
he
could
be
just
as
indifferent
as
anyone
else.
Soon
she
arrived.
Tom
pretended
not
to
notice
her.
He
moved
away
to
join
a
group
of
boys
and
girls
and
started
talking.
He
saw
her
playing
around,
laughing
loudly
as
she
caught
her
friends,
but
he
noticed
she
always
did
it
near
him
and
looked
at
him
often.
This
made
him
feel
proud,
and
instead
of
making
him
want
her,
it
made
him
more
determined
to
ignore
her.
After
a
while,
she
stopped
playing
and
walked
around,
sighing
and
glancing
at
Tom.
Then
she
saw
Tom
talking
more
with
Amy
Lawrence
than
anyone
else.
This
upset
her,
and
she
felt
uneasy.
She
tried
to
walk
away,
but
ended
up
near
the
group.
She
spoke
to
a
girl
close
to
Tom,
pretending
to
be
cheerful.
“Why,
Mary
Austin!
You
naughty
girl,
why
didn’t
you
come
to
Sunday
school?”
“I
did
come—didn’t
you
see
me?”
“Really?
Did
you?
Where
did
you
sit?”
“I
was
in
Miss
Peters’
class,
like
always.
I
saw
you.”
“Did
you?
That’s
strange,
I
didn’t
see
you.
I
wanted
to
tell
you
about
the
picnic.”
“Oh,
that
sounds
great.
Who’s
organizing
it?”
