Tom
made
him
feel
happy
again.
He
went
to
school
and
was
lucky
to
meet
Becky
Thatcher
at
the
start
of
Meadow
Lane.
His
mood
always
affected
how
he
acted.
Without
thinking,
he
ran
to
her
and
said:
"I
was
really
mean
today,
Becky,
and
I'm

sorry.
I
won't

promise—please

up

me?"
The
girl
stopped
and
looked
at
him
with
scorn:

appreciate

head

Tom

shocked

replied

and

fight
was
complete.
Becky
was

mad,
she
couldn’t
wait
for
school
to
start,
eager
to
see
Tom
punished
for
the
damaged
spelling-book.
She
had
thought
about
telling
on
Alfred
Temple,
but
Tom’s
comment
changed
her
mind.
Poor
girl,
she
didn’t
know
she
was
heading
for
trouble
herself.
Mr.
Dobbins,
the
teacher,
was
a
middle-aged
man
with
dreams
of
being
a
doctor,
but
he
was
just
a
village
schoolmaster
due
to
lack
of
money.
Every
day,
he
took
a
mysterious
book
from
his
desk
and
read
it
when
no
classes
were
going
on.
He
kept
it
locked
up,
and
all
the
kids
wanted
to
see
it,
but
never
got
the
chance.
Everyone
had
their
own
ideas
about
the
book,
but
no
one
knew
for
sure.
As
Becky
passed
the
desk
near
the
door,
she
saw
the
key
in
the
lock!
It
was
a
lucky
moment.
She
looked
around,
saw
she
was
alone,
and
grabbed
the
book.
The
title—Professor
Somebody’s
Anatomy—meant
nothing
to
her,
so
she
started
flipping
through
it.
She
quickly
found
a
detailed
picture
of
a
naked
human
figure.
Just
then,
a
shadow
fell
on
the
page,
and
Tom
Sawyer
entered,
catching
a
glimpse
of
the
picture.
Becky
tried
to
close
the
book
quickly
and
accidentally
tore
the
page.
She
shoved
the
book
back,
locked
the
desk,
and
burst
into
tears
from
shame
and
frustration.
“Tom
Sawyer,
you’re
so
mean
to
sneak
up
on
someone
and
look
at
what
they’re
seeing.”
“How
could
I
know
you
were
looking
at
anything?”
