Las aventuras de Tom Sawyer
Capítulo 21, Página 2
“In
everyday
life,
how
delightful
is
the
youthful
mind’s
anticipation
of
a
festive
event!
Imagination
paints
joyful
pictures.
In
her
mind,
the
fashion
lover
sees
herself
at
the
party,
‘the
observed
of
all
observers.’
Her
elegant
form,
in
white
robes,
dances
joyfully;
her
eyes
are
the
brightest,
her
steps
the
lightest
in
the
cheerful
crowd.
“In
such
pleasant
dreams,
time
flies,
and
the
moment
comes
for
her
to
enter
the
magical
world
she
dreamed
of.
Everything
looks
magical
to
her
enchanted
eyes!
Each
new
scene
is
more
beautiful
than
the
last.
But
soon
she
realizes
that
under
this
lovely
surface,
all
is
vanity.
The
flattery
that
once
pleased
her
now
sounds
harsh.
The
ballroom
has
lost
its
charm;
with
poor
health
and
a
bitter
heart,
she
turns
away,
knowing
that
earthly
pleasures
cannot
satisfy
the
soul’s
desires!”
And
so
it
went
on.
There
was
a
buzz
of
satisfaction
during
the
reading,
with
whispers
of
“How
sweet!”
“How
eloquent!”
“So
true!”
and
when
it
ended
with
a
particularly
sad
sermon,
the
applause
was
loud.
Then
a
slim,
sad-looking
girl,
with
a
pale
face
from
pills
and
indigestion,
stood
up
and
read
a
“poem.”
Two
stanzas
will
do:
“A
MISSOURI
MAIDEN’S
FAREWELL
TO
ALABAMA
"Alabama,
goodbye!
I
love
you
very
much!
But
I
must
leave
you
for
a
while.
Sad,
yes,
sad
thoughts
fill
my
heart,
and
memories
crowd
my
mind!
I
have
wandered
through
your
beautiful
woods;
I
have
read
near
Tallapoosa’s
stream;
I
have
listened
to
Tallassee’s
rushing
waters,
and
watched
the
sunrise
by
Coosa’s
side.
"I
am
not
ashamed
to
have
a
full
heart,
nor
embarrassed
to
have
tears
in
my
eyes.
I
am
not
leaving
a
strange
land,
and
I
am
not
saying
goodbye
to
strangers.
I
found
a
home
here
in
this
State,
whose
valleys
I
leave
behind—whose
spires
fade
away.
My
eyes,
heart,
and
mind
would
have
to
be
cold
if
they
ever
turned
cold
on
you,
dear
Alabama!"
Not
many
people
there
knew
what
"tête"
meant,
but
the
poem
was
still
very
satisfying.
