Las aventuras de Tom Sawyer
Capítulo 23, Página 4
"And
they
would
do
it,
too."
The
boys
talked
for
a
long
time,
but
it
didn’t
make
them
feel
better.
As
it
got
dark,
they
stayed
near
the
small
jail,
hoping
something
would
happen
to
change
things.
But
nothing
happened;
no
one
seemed
to
care
about
poor
Potter.
The
boys
did
what
they
often
did
before—they
went
to
the
cell
window
and
gave
Potter
some
tobacco
and
matches.
He
was
on
the
ground
floor,
and
there
were
no
guards.
Potter
was
always
grateful
for
their
gifts,
which
made
them
feel
even
worse.
They
felt
cowardly
and
guilty
when
Potter
said:
"You’ve
been
very
good
to
me,
boys—better
than
anyone
else
here.
I
don’t
forget
it.
I
often
think,
‘I
used
to
help
all
the
boys,
fixing
kites
and
showing
them
where
to
fish,
and
now
they’ve
forgotten
me,
but
not
Tom
and
Huck.’
Well,
boys,
I
did
something
terrible—drunk
and
crazy
at
the
time—that’s
how
I
explain
it.
Now
I
have
to
pay
for
it,
and
it’s
right.
I
hope
so,
anyway.
Let’s
not
talk
about
it.
I
don’t
want
to
make
you
feel
bad;
you’ve
helped
me.
But
don’t
ever
get
drunk—then
you
won’t
end
up
like
me.
Stand
a
little
to
the
side—yes,
that’s
it;
it’s
nice
to
see
friendly
faces
when
you’re
in
such
trouble,
and
no
one
else
comes
here
but
you.
Good
friendly
faces.
Stand
on
each
other’s
backs
so
I
can
touch
them.
That’s
it.
Shake
hands—yours
will
fit
through
the
bars,
but
mine
won’t.
Little
hands,
but
they’ve
helped
Muff
Potter
a
lot,
and
they’d
help
more
if
they
could."
Tom
went
home
feeling
terrible,
and
his
dreams
were
full
of
nightmares.
The
next
day
and
the
one
after,
he
stayed
near
the
courtroom,
feeling
a
strong
pull
to
go
in
but
forcing
himself
not
to.
Huck
felt
the
same
way.
They
avoided
each
other.
Each
wandered
off,
but
the
same
sad
interest
always
brought
them
back.
Tom
listened
when
people
came
out
of
the
courtroom,
but
he
always
heard
bad
news.
Things
were
looking
worse
for
poor
Potter.
By
the
end
of
the
second
day,
everyone
was
saying
that
Injun
Joe’s
evidence
was
solid,
and
there
was
no
doubt
about
what
the
jury
would
decide.
Tom
was
out
late
that
night
and
came
to
bed
through
the
window.
He
was
very
excited
and
couldn’t
sleep
for
hours.
The
next
morning,
the
whole
village
went
to
the
courthouse
for
the
big
day.
The
audience
was
packed
with
both
men
and
women.
After
waiting
a
long
time,
the
jury
came
in
and
took
their
seats.
Soon
after,
Potter
was
brought
in,
looking
pale
and
hopeless,
with
chains
on
him.
Everyone
stared
at
him.
Injun
Joe
was
there
too,
looking
as
calm
as
ever.
There
was
another
pause,
then
the
judge
arrived,
and
the
sheriff
announced
the
start
of
the
court.
The
lawyers
whispered
and
gathered
their
papers.
These
actions
created
a
tense
and
fascinating
atmosphere.
A
witness
was
called
who
said
he
found
Muff
Potter
washing
in
the
brook
early
on
the
morning
the
murder
was
discovered.
He
said
Potter
sneaked
away.
After
more
questions,
the
prosecution
lawyer
said:
