started

show

annoyed.
Did

lawyer
plan

let

Several
witnesses
talked
about
Potter’s
guilty
behavior
when
he
was
brought
to
the
murder
scene.
They
left
the
stand
without
being
questioned.
Every
detail
of
what
happened
that
morning
in
the
graveyard
was
revealed
by
reliable
witnesses,
but
none
were
questioned
by
Potter’s
lawyer.
The
audience’s
confusion
and
unhappiness
were
clear,
and
the
judge
had
to
warn
them.
The
prosecution
lawyer
then
said:
"By
the
word
of
honest
citizens,
we
have
proven
this
terrible
crime
against
the
prisoner.
We
rest
our
case."
Poor
Potter
groaned,
covering
his
face
with
his
hands,
rocking
gently.
The
courtroom
was
silent.
Many
men
were
moved,
and
many
women
showed
their
compassion
with
tears.
The
defense
lawyer
stood
up
and
said:
"Your
honor,
we
planned
to
prove
that
our
client
committed
this
act
while
in
a
drunken
delirium.
We
have
changed
our
minds.
We
will
not
use
that
argument."
[Then
to
the
clerk:]
"Call
Thomas
Sawyer!"
Everyone
in
the
room
was
surprised,
even
Potter.
All
eyes
turned
to
Tom
as
he
stood
up
and
went
to
the
stand.
He
looked
very
scared.
The
oath
was
given.
"Thomas
Sawyer,
where
were
you
on
the
night
of
June
seventeenth,
around
midnight?"
