Tom
hesitated
and
looked
unsure.
"Speak
up,

boy—don’t

shy.
The
truth
is
always
good.
What
did
you
bring?"
"Only
a—a—dead
cat."
There
was
a
small
laugh,
which
the
court
stopped.
"We
will
show
the
cat’s
skeleton.
Now,
my
boy,
tell
us
everything
that
happened—tell
it
in
your
own
words—don’t
leave
anything
out,
and
don’t
be
afraid."
Tom
started
slowly,
but
as
he
got
into
the
story,
he
spoke
more
easily.
Soon,
the
room
was
silent
except
for
his
voice.
Everyone
watched
him,
with
open
mouths
and
held
breaths,
caught
up
in
the
gripping
story.
The
tension
reached
its
peak
when
the
boy
said:

with

knife
