Las aventuras de Tom Sawyer
Capítulo 28, Página 1
That
night,
Tom
and
Huck
were
ready
for
their
adventure.
They
stayed
around
the
tavern
neighborhood
until
after
nine,
with
one
watching
the
alley
from
afar
and
the
other
watching
the
tavern
door.
Nobody
entered
or
left
the
alley,
and
nobody
like
the
Spaniard
went
in
or
out
of
the
tavern.
The
night
seemed
like
it
would
stay
clear,
so
Tom
went
home.
They
agreed
that
if
it
got
really
dark,
Huck
would
come
and
make
a
cat
noise,
and
then
Tom
would
sneak
out
and
try
the
keys.
But
the
night
stayed
clear,
so
Huck
stopped
watching
and
went
to
sleep
in
an
empty
sugar
barrel
around
midnight.
Tuesday
and
Wednesday
were
unlucky
for
the
boys
too.
But
Thursday
night
seemed
more
promising.
Tom
sneaked
out
early
with
his
aunt’s
old
tin
lantern
and
a
big
towel
to
cover
it.
He
hid
the
lantern
in
Huck’s
sugar
barrel,
and
they
started
their
watch.
An
hour
before
midnight,
the
tavern
closed,
and
its
lights,
the
only
ones
around,
went
out.
No
Spaniard
had
been
seen.
Nobody
entered
or
left
the
alley.
Everything
seemed
good.
The
darkness
was
deep,
and
only
distant
thunder
broke
the
silence.
Tom
got
his
lantern,
lit
it
inside
the
barrel,
and
wrapped
it
tightly
with
the
towel.
The
two
adventurers
crept
through
the
dark
toward
the
tavern.
Huck
stood
guard
while
Tom
felt
his
way
into
the
alley.
Huck
waited
anxiously,
feeling
as
if
a
heavy
weight
was
on
him.
He
wished
to
see
a
flash
from
the
lantern—it
would
scare
him,
but
at
least
he'd
know
Tom
was
okay.
It
felt
like
hours
since
Tom
had
disappeared.
Huck
thought
maybe
Tom
fainted
or
even
died
from
fear
and
excitement.
Huck
moved
closer
to
the
alley,
fearing
something
terrible
might
happen.
Suddenly,
a
flash
of
light
came,
and
Tom
ran
past
him.
“Run!”
Tom
said.
“Run,
for
your
life!”
Huck
didn’t
need
to
be
told
twice;
he
was
already
running
as
fast
as
he
could.
The
boys
didn’t
stop
until
they
reached
a
shed
at
an
old
slaughterhouse
on
the
edge
of
the
village.
Just
as
they
got
inside,
a
storm
broke,
and
the
rain
poured
down.
Once
Tom
caught
his
breath,
he
said:
“Huck,
it
was
terrible!
I
tried
two
keys,
as
quietly
as
I
could,
but
they
made
so
much
noise
that
I
could
hardly
breathe
from
fear.
They
didn’t
turn
in
the
lock
either.
Without
thinking,
I
grabbed
the
knob,
and
the
door
opened!
It
wasn’t
locked!
I
jumped
in,
took
off
the
towel,
and,
Great
Caesar’s
Ghost!”
“What!
What
did
you
see,
Tom?”
“Huck,
I
almost
stepped
on
Injun
Joe’s
hand!”
“No
way!”
