small
boats
headed
to
McDougal’s
cave.
The
ferryboat,

passengers,

followed.
Tom
Sawyer
was
in
the
boat
with
Judge
Thatcher.
When
they
unlocked
the
cave
door,
a
sad
sight
appeared
in
the
dim
light.
Injun
Joe
lay
dead
on
the
ground,
his
face
near
the
door
crack,
as
if
he
had
been
looking
at
the
light
outside.
Tom
felt
sorry
for
him
because
he
understood
how
much
Injun
Joe
had
suffered.
He
felt
pity,
but
he
also
felt
a
huge
relief
and
safety.
Now
he
realized
how
much
fear
he
had
carried
since
he
spoke
against
this
dangerous
man.
Injun
Joe’s
bowie-knife
was
nearby,
its
blade
broken.
He
had
tried
to
cut
through
the
door’s
beam,
but
it
was
useless
because
the
rock
outside
was
too
strong.
Even
if
he
had
cut
through,
he
couldn’t
have
squeezed
under
the
door.
He
only
worked
to
pass
the
time
and
keep
busy.
Usually,
tourists
left
bits
of
candle
in
the
cave,
but
Injun
Joe
had
found
and
eaten
them.
He
also
caught
and
ate
a
few
bats,
leaving
only
their
claws.
He
had
starved
to
death.
Nearby,

stalagmite
had
been
growing
from
water
dripping
from
a
stalactite
above.
Injun
Joe
had
broken
it
and
used
a
stone
to
catch
the
drops,
which
fell
once
every
three
minutes.
That
drop
had
been
falling

ancient
times,

it
was
still
falling
now.”

Joe
was
buried
near
the
cave
entrance.
People
came
from
towns,
farms,
and
villages,
bringing
their
children
and
food.
They
said
the
funeral
was
almost
as
entertaining
as
a
hanging.
The
funeral
stopped
the
petition
for
Injun
Joe’s
pardon.
Many
people
had
signed
it,
and
meetings
were
held.
A
group
of
women
planned
to
ask
the
governor
for
mercy.
Injun
Joe
was
believed
to
have
killed
five
people,
but
that
didn’t
stop
people
from
supporting
a
pardon.
The
morning
after
the
funeral,
Tom
took
Huck
to
a
private
place
to
talk.
Huck
already
knew
about
Tom’s
adventure
from
the
Welshman
and
Widow
Douglas.
But
Tom
said
there
was
something
they
hadn’t
told
Huck,
and
he
wanted
to
talk
about
it.
Huck
looked
sad
and
said:
“I
know.
You
got
into
No.
2
and
only
found
whiskey.
No
one
told
me
it
was
you,
but
I
guessed
it
was
you
when
I
heard
about
the
whiskey.
I
knew
you
hadn’t
found
the
money
because
you
would
have
told
me.
I
always
thought
we
wouldn’t
find
that
treasure.”
