you

the
women.

lock
them
up,
but
don't
kill
them.
They're
always
beautiful
and
rich,
and
very
scared.
You
take
their
watches
and
things,
but
you
always
take
your
hat
off
and
talk
politely.
Robbers
are
the
most
polite
people—you'll
see
that
in
any
book.
The
women
start
to
like
you,
and
after
a
week
or
two
in
the
cave,
they
stop
crying.
Then
they
don't
want
to
leave.
If
you
send
them
away,
they'd
turn
around
and
come
back.
It's
like
that
in
all
the
books."
"Wow,

really
cool,
Tom.
I
think
it's
even
better
than
being
a
pirate."
"Yes,
it's
better
in
some
ways
because
it's
close
to
home
and
near
circuses
and
all
that."
By
now,
everything
was
ready,
and
the
boys
went
into
the
hole,
Tom
leading.
They
worked
their
way
to
the
end
of
the
tunnel,
tied
their
kite-strings
together,
and
moved
on.
A
few
steps
brought
them
to
the
spring,
and
Tom
felt
a
shiver
go
through
him.
He
showed
Huck
the
bit
of
candle-wick
on
a
lump
of
clay
against
the
wall
and
explained
how
he
and
Becky
watched
the
flame
struggle
and
die.
The
boys
started
to
whisper,
as
the
quiet
and
darkness
of
the
place
made
them
feel
uneasy.
They
continued
and
soon
entered
and
followed
Tom's
other
path
until
they
reached
the
"jumping-off
place."
The
candles
showed
that
it
wasn’t
a
real
cliff,
just
a
steep
clay
hill
twenty
or
thirty
feet
high.
Tom
