Las aventuras de Tom Sawyer
Capítulo 9, Página 7
“Yes,
and
you
did
more
than
that,”
said
Injun
Joe,
moving
closer
to
the
doctor,
who
was
now
standing.
“Five
years
ago,
you
drove
me
away
from
your
father’s
kitchen
one
night
when
I
came
to
ask
for
food,
and
you
said
I
wasn’t
there
for
any
good.
When
I
swore
I’d
get
even
with
you,
your
father
had
me
jailed
for
being
a
vagrant.
Did
you
think
I’d
forget?
The
Injun
blood
in
me
isn’t
for
nothing.
And
now
I’ve
got
you,
and
you
have
to
settle!”
He
was
threatening
the
doctor,
with
his
fist
in
his
face
by
now.
The
doctor
suddenly
hit
him,
knocking
the
ruffian
to
the
ground.
Potter
dropped
his
knife
and
exclaimed:
"Hey,
don't
hit
my
friend!"
In
the
next
moment,
he
was
fighting
with
the
doctor.
They
struggled
hard,
trampling
the
grass
and
tearing
the
ground
with
their
feet.
Injun
Joe
jumped
up,
his
eyes
full
of
anger.
He
grabbed
Potter’s
knife
and
moved
around
the
fighters
like
a
cat,
waiting
for
his
chance.
Suddenly,
the
doctor
broke
free,
grabbed
a
heavy
board
from
Williams’
grave,
and
knocked
Potter
to
the
ground.
At
that
moment,
the
half-breed
saw
his
chance
and
stabbed
the
young
man
in
the
chest
with
the
knife.
The
young
man
fell
on
Potter,
covering
him
with
blood.
Then
the
clouds
covered
the
scene,
and
the
two
scared
boys
ran
away
into
the
dark.
Soon,
when
the
moon
came
out
again,
Injun
Joe
stood
over
the
two
bodies,
looking
at
them.
The
doctor
made
some
sounds,
took
a
few
deep
breaths,
and
then
was
still.
The
half-breed
muttered:
"That’s
done—damn
you."
Then
he
took
things
from
the
body.
He
put
the
knife
in
Potter’s
open
hand
and
sat
on
the
broken
coffin.
After
three,
four,
five
minutes,
Potter
began
to
move
and
moan.
He
held
the
knife,
looked
at
it,
and
dropped
it,
shivering.
He
sat
up,
pushed
the
body
away,
and
looked
around,
confused.
His
eyes
met
Joe’s.
"Lord,
what
happened,
Joe?"
he
asked.
"It’s
a
dirty
business,"
Joe
replied,
not
moving.
"Why
did
you
do
it?"
