Las aventuras de Tom Sawyer
Capítulo 1, Página 7
Within
two
minutes,
or
even
less,
he
had
forgotten
all
his
troubles.
Not
because
his
troubles
were
any
less
serious
or
bitter
to
him
than
a
man’s
are
to
a
man,
but
because
a
new
and
exciting
interest
pushed
them
aside
and
drove
them
from
his
mind
for
the
time—just
as
men’s
problems
are
forgotten
in
the
excitement
of
new
ventures.
This
new
interest
was
a
fascinating
novelty
in
whistling,
which
he
had
just
learned
from
a
black
man,
and
he
was
eager
to
practice
it
undisturbed.
It
involved
a
peculiar
bird-like
trill,
a
sort
of
liquid
warble,
produced
by
touching
the
tongue
to
the
roof
of
the
mouth
at
short
intervals
during
the
music—the
reader
probably
remembers
how
to
do
it
if
he’s
ever
been
a
boy.
With
diligence
and
attention,
he
soon
mastered
it,
and
he
walked
down
the
street
with
his
mouth
full
of
melody
and
his
heart
full
of
gratitude.
He
felt
much
like
an
astronomer
who
has
discovered
a
new
planet—no
doubt,
as
far
as
strong,
deep,
pure
pleasure
is
concerned,
the
advantage
was
with
the
boy,
not
the
astronomer.
The
summer
evenings
stretched
on.
It
wasn't
dark
yet.
Suddenly,
Tom
stopped
whistling.
A
stranger
stood
before
him—a
boy
slightly
bigger
than
him.
In
the
small,
shabby
village
of
St.
Petersburg,
a
newcomer
of
any
age
or
gender
was
a
remarkable
curiosity.
This
boy
was
well-dressed,
especially
for
a
weekday.
It
was
astonishing.
His
cap
was
a
delicate
thing,
his
buttoned-up
blue
jacket
was
new
and
stylish,
as
were
his
trousers.
He
wore
shoes—and
it
was
only
Friday.
He
even
had
a
necktie,
a
bright
ribbon.
He
had
a
city-like
air
that
gnawed
at
Tom.
The
more
Tom
stared
at
the
marvelous
sight,
the
more
he
turned
his
nose
up
at
the
boy's
finery,
and
the
shabbier
his
own
clothes
seemed.
Neither
boy
spoke.
If
one
moved,
the
other
did
too—but
only
sideways,
in
a
circle;
they
kept
facing
each
other,
eye
to
eye.
Finally,
Tom
said:
“I
can
beat
you
up!”
“I'd
like
to
see
you
try.”
“Well,
I
can
do
it.”
“No,
you
can't.”
“Yes,
I
can.”
“No,
you
can't.”
