Las aventuras de Tom Sawyer
Capítulo 11, Página 5
"Oh,
it’s
that
dreadful
murder.
I
dream
about
it
almost
every
night
myself.
Sometimes
I
dream
I’m
the
one
who
did
it."
Mary
said
she
had
been
affected
similarly.
Sid
seemed
satisfied.
Tom
got
away
as
quickly
as
he
could,
and
after
that,
he
complained
of
a
toothache
for
a
week,
tying
up
his
jaws
every
night.
He
never
knew
that
Sid
lay
awake
watching,
often
loosening
the
bandage
and
then
listening
for
a
while,
before
putting
it
back
in
place.
Tom's
mental
distress
gradually
eased,
and
the
toothache
became
bothersome
and
was
abandoned.
If
Sid
managed
to
make
sense
of
Tom’s
fragmented
mutterings,
he
kept
it
to
himself.
It
seemed
to
Tom
that
his
classmates
would
never
stop
holding
inquests
on
dead
cats,
constantly
reminding
him
of
his
troubles.
Sid
noticed
that
Tom
never
took
the
role
of
coroner
at
these
inquiries,
though
he
usually
led
all
new
activities;
he
also
noticed
that
Tom
never
acted
as
a
witness—which
was
strange;
and
Sid
didn’t
miss
the
fact
that
Tom
showed
a
strong
dislike
for
these
inquests,
avoiding
them
whenever
possible.
Sid
was
puzzled
but
said
nothing.
Eventually,
even
the
inquests
went
out
of
fashion
and
stopped
tormenting
Tom’s
conscience.
Every
few
days,
during
this
troubled
time,
Tom
watched
for
a
chance
to
visit
the
small
barred
window
of
the
jail
and
slipped
whatever
small
comforts
he
could
to
the
"murderer."
The
jail
was
a
tiny
brick
building
in
a
marsh
on
the
village's
edge,
with
no
guards;
it
was
rarely
occupied.
These
offerings
greatly
eased
Tom’s
conscience.
The
villagers
really
wanted
to
punish
Injun
Joe
for
body-snatching
by
tarring
and
feathering
him,
then
parading
him
on
a
rail.
However,
his
intimidating
nature
kept
anyone
from
stepping
up
to
lead
this
effort,
so
the
idea
was
abandoned.
Injun
Joe
had
cleverly
started
both
of
his
statements
at
the
inquest
with
the
fight,
avoiding
any
mention
of
the
grave-robbing
that
happened
before.
As
a
result,
it
was
considered
best
not
to
pursue
the
case
in
court
for
the
time
being.
