Las aventuras de Tom Sawyer
Capítulo 12, Página 4
“A
lot.
Because
if
he
had
one,
she’d
have
burned
him
out
herself!
She’d
have
roasted
him
without
a
second
thought,
just
like
a
human!”
Aunt
Polly
felt
a
pang
of
guilt.
This
was
a
new
perspective;
what
was
cruel
to
a
cat
might
be
cruel
to
a
boy,
too.
She
softened
and
felt
sorry.
Her
eyes
watered,
and
she
gently
placed
her
hand
on
Tom’s
head.
“I
meant
well,
Tom.
And
it
did
help
you.”
Tom
looked
at
her
with
a
slight
twinkle
in
his
eyes.
“I
know
you
meant
well,
aunt,
and
so
did
I
with
Peter.
It
helped
him,
too.
I’ve
never
seen
him
move
so
fast
since—”
“Oh,
go
on,
Tom,
before
you
make
me
angry
again.
Try
to
be
a
good
boy
for
once,
and
don’t
take
any
more
medicine.”
Tom
arrived
at
school
earlier
than
usual.
Lately,
this
odd
behavior
had
been
happening
every
day.
As
usual,
he
lingered
by
the
schoolyard
gate
instead
of
joining
his
friends
in
play.
He
claimed
he
was
feeling
unwell,
and
he
certainly
looked
it.
He
pretended
to
glance
around,
but
his
real
focus
was
down
the
road.
Soon,
Jeff
Thatcher
appeared,
and
Tom's
face
brightened
for
a
moment
before
he
turned
away
sadly.
When
Jeff
reached
him,
Tom
cautiously
tried
to
steer
the
conversation
towards
Becky,
but
Jeff
didn't
take
the
hint.
Tom
kept
watching,
hoping
each
time
he
saw
a
dress
in
the
distance,
only
to
feel
disappointed
when
it
wasn't
the
right
one.
Eventually,
no
more
dresses
appeared,
and
he
sank
into
despair,
heading
into
the
empty
schoolhouse
to
sulk.
Just
then,
another
dress
entered
the
gate,
and
Tom's
heart
leaped.
In
an
instant,
he
was
outside,
acting
wildly
like
a
Native
American;
yelling,
laughing,
chasing
boys,
leaping
over
the
fence
recklessly,
doing
somersaults,
standing
on
his
head—doing
everything
he
could
think
of
to
impress,
all
the
while
sneaking
glances
to
see
if
Becky
Thatcher
noticed.
But
she
seemed
oblivious;
she
didn't
look
his
way.
Could
it
be
she
didn't
know
he
was
there?
He
brought
his
antics
closer
to
her,
ran
around
wildly,
grabbed
a
boy's
cap
and
threw
it
onto
the
schoolhouse
roof,
burst
through
a
group
of
boys,
knocking
them
over,
and
landed
sprawling
at
Becky's
feet,
nearly
knocking
her
over—and
she
turned
away,
nose
in
the
air,
and
he
heard
her
say:
“Mf!
Some
people
think
they're
really
clever—always
showing
off!”
Tom's
face
turned
red
with
embarrassment.
He
picked
himself
up
and
slunk
away,
feeling
utterly
defeated
and
humiliated.
