Las aventuras de Tom Sawyer
Capítulo 16, Página 4
"Tom,
I
wish
you'd
come,
too.
Think
it
over.
We'll
wait
for
you
when
we
reach
the
shore."
"Well,
you'll
wait
a
long
time,
that's
all."
Huck
started
to
leave
sadly,
and
Tom
stood
watching
him,
feeling
a
strong
urge
to
swallow
his
pride
and
join
them.
He
hoped
the
boys
would
stop,
but
they
kept
wading
away.
Suddenly,
Tom
realized
how
lonely
and
quiet
it
had
become.
He
made
one
last
attempt
to
hold
onto
his
pride,
then
dashed
after
them,
shouting:
"Wait!
Wait!
I
want
to
tell
you
something!"
They
stopped
and
turned
around.
When
he
reached
them,
he
began
to
share
his
secret,
and
they
listened
moodily
until
they
finally
understood
the
"point"
he
was
making.
Then
they
cheered
and
said
it
was
"splendid!"
and
that
if
he
had
told
them
earlier,
they
wouldn't
have
started
leaving.
He
made
up
a
plausible
excuse;
but
the
real
reason
was
his
fear
that
even
the
secret
might
not
keep
them
with
him
for
long,
so
he
had
saved
it
as
a
last
resort.
The
boys
happily
returned
and
eagerly
resumed
their
games,
constantly
chatting
about
Tom's
amazing
plan
and
admiring
his
cleverness.
After
a
delightful
egg
and
fish
dinner,
Tom
said
he
wanted
to
learn
to
smoke
now.
Joe
liked
the
idea
and
wanted
to
try,
too.
So
Huck
made
pipes
and
filled
them.
These
beginners
had
never
smoked
anything
before
except
grapevine
cigars,
which
"bit"
the
tongue
and
weren't
considered
manly.
They
lay
on
their
elbows
and
began
to
puff
cautiously,
with
little
confidence.
The
smoke
tasted
bad,
and
they
gagged
a
bit,
but
Tom
said:
"Why,
it's
so
easy!
If
I'd
known
that's
all
it
was,
I'd
have
learned
a
long
time
ago."
