Las aventuras de Tom Sawyer
Capítulo 20, Página 1
Aunt
Polly’s
way
of
kissing
Tom
lifted
his
spirits
and
made
him
feel
cheerful
again.
On
his
way
to
school,
he
was
lucky
enough
to
meet
Becky
Thatcher
at
the
start
of
Meadow
Lane.
His
mood
always
influenced
his
behavior.
Without
hesitating,
he
ran
up
to
her
and
said:
“I
acted
really
badly
today,
Becky,
and
I’m
so
sorry.
I
promise
I’ll
never
do
that
again,
ever—please
let’s
make
up,
okay?”
Becky
stopped
and
looked
at
him
with
disdain:
“I’d
appreciate
it
if
you
stayed
away
from
me,
Mr.
Thomas
Sawyer.
I’ll
never
talk
to
you
again.”
She
tossed
her
head
and
walked
away.
Tom
was
so
shocked
that
he
didn’t
even
think
to
say
“Who
cares,
Miss
Smarty?”
until
it
was
too
late.
So
he
stayed
silent,
but
he
was
furious.
He
sulked
into
the
schoolyard,
wishing
she
were
a
boy
so
he
could
give
her
a
beating.
Soon,
he
saw
her
again
and
made
a
cutting
remark
as
he
walked
by.
She
shot
one
back,
and
their
argument
was
complete.
Becky,
still
burning
with
anger,
could
hardly
wait
for
school
to
start,
eager
to
see
Tom
punished
for
the
damaged
spelling-book.
Any
thought
of
exposing
Alfred
Temple
had
vanished
due
to
Tom’s
hurtful
comment.
Poor
Becky,
she
didn’t
realize
how
close
she
was
to
trouble
herself.
Mr.
Dobbins,
the
schoolmaster,
had
reached
middle
age
with
unfulfilled
dreams.
He
wanted
to
be
a
doctor,
but
poverty
had
left
him
as
only
a
village
schoolteacher.
Every
day,
he
took
out
a
mysterious
book
from
his
desk
and
read
it
when
no
classes
were
in
session.
He
kept
it
locked
away,
and
every
student
was
dying
to
see
it,
but
the
opportunity
never
came.
Each
student
had
a
theory
about
the
book’s
content;
none
were
the
same,
and
there
was
no
way
to
find
out
the
truth.
As
Becky
passed
by
the
desk,
she
noticed
the
key
in
the
lock!
It
was
a
golden
chance.
She
looked
around;
finding
herself
alone,
she
quickly
grabbed
the
book.
The
title
page—Professor
Somebody’s
Anatomy—meant
nothing
to
her,
so
she
began
flipping
through
the
pages.
She
soon
found
a
beautifully
illustrated
and
colored
frontispiece—a
naked
human
figure.
Just
then,
a
shadow
fell
on
the
page
as
Tom
Sawyer
entered
and
glimpsed
the
picture.
Becky
tried
to
close
the
book,
but
tore
the
page
in
half.
She
shoved
the
book
back
into
the
desk,
locked
it,
and
burst
into
tears
of
shame
and
frustration.
“Tom
Sawyer,
you’re
as
mean
as
can
be,
sneaking
up
on
someone
and
looking
at
what
they’re
seeing.”
“How
was
I
supposed
to
know
you
were
looking
at
anything?”
