Las aventuras de Tom Sawyer
Capítulo 20, Página 4
The
same
response.
“Susan
Harper,
did
you
do
this?”
Another
negative.
The
next
girl
was
Becky
Thatcher.
Tom
was
trembling
with
excitement
and
a
sense
of
the
hopelessness
of
the
situation.
"Rebecca
Thatcher,"
Tom
said,
looking
at
her
pale,
terrified
face,
"did
you
tear—no,
look
me
in
the
eyes,"
as
her
hands
rose
in
appeal,
"did
you
tear
this
book?"
A
thought
flashed
through
Tom's
mind
like
lightning.
He
jumped
up
and
shouted,
"I
did
it!"
The
class
stared
in
confusion
at
this
unbelievable
act.
Tom
paused
for
a
moment
to
collect
his
scattered
thoughts.
When
he
stepped
forward
to
accept
his
punishment,
the
surprise,
gratitude,
and
admiration
shining
from
poor
Becky's
eyes
seemed
worth
a
hundred
beatings.
Inspired
by
the
glory
of
his
own
action,
he
endured
the
harshest
whipping
Mr.
Dobbins
had
ever
given
without
a
cry.
He
also
accepted
the
extra
punishment
of
staying
two
hours
after
school
without
complaint,
knowing
who
would
wait
for
him
outside
until
his
detention
was
over,
and
who
wouldn't
consider
the
long
wait
a
waste
of
time.
That
night,
Tom
went
to
bed
plotting
revenge
against
Alfred
Temple.
Becky
had
confessed
everything
to
him,
full
of
shame
and
regret,
including
her
own
betrayal.
But
even
his
desire
for
revenge
soon
gave
way
to
sweeter
thoughts,
and
he
fell
asleep
with
Becky's
latest
words
echoing
dreamily
in
his
mind—
"Tom,
how
could
you
be
so
noble!"
