Las aventuras de Tom Sawyer
Capítulo 21, Página 2
"In
the
usual
paths
of
life,
with
what
delightful
feelings
does
the
young
mind
look
forward
to
some
anticipated
festive
scene!
Imagination
is
busy
creating
rose-tinted
pictures
of
joy.
In
her
mind,
the
fashion
devotee
sees
herself
among
the
festive
crowd,
'the
observed
of
all
observers.'
Her
graceful
form,
dressed
in
snowy
robes,
dances
through
the
joyful
dance;
her
eyes
are
the
brightest,
her
step
the
lightest
in
the
lively
gathering.
"In
such
delightful
fantasies,
time
flies
by,
and
the
awaited
hour
arrives
for
her
to
enter
the
Elysian
world
she
has
dreamed
of.
How
magical
everything
seems
to
her
enchanted
vision!
Each
new
scene
is
more
charming
than
the
last.
But
eventually,
she
realizes
that
beneath
this
attractive
exterior,
all
is
vanity;
the
flattery
that
once
delighted
her
now
grates
on
her
ears;
the
ballroom
has
lost
its
appeal;
and
with
her
health
wasted
and
her
heart
embittered,
she
turns
away,
convinced
that
earthly
pleasures
cannot
satisfy
the
soul's
longings!"
And
so
on
and
so
forth.
There
was
a
murmur
of
satisfaction
during
the
reading,
accompanied
by
whispered
comments
of
"How
sweet!"
"How
eloquent!"
"So
true!"
and
after
it
ended
with
a
particularly
distressing
sermon,
the
applause
was
enthusiastic.
Then
a
slim,
melancholy
girl
stood
up,
her
face
showing
the
"interesting"
paleness
that
comes
from
pills
and
indigestion,
and
read
a
"poem."
Two
stanzas
will
suffice:
"A
MISSOURI
MAIDEN’S
FAREWELL
TO
ALABAMA
"Alabama,
farewell!
I
love
you
dearly!
But
for
a
while,
I
must
leave
you!
Sad
thoughts
of
you
fill
my
heart,
and
vivid
memories
crowd
my
mind!
I've
wandered
through
your
flowery
woods;
roamed
and
read
near
Tallapoosa's
stream;
listened
to
Tallassee's
rushing
waters,
and
watched
the
morning
light
by
Coosa's
side.
"Still,
I
am
not
ashamed
to
have
a
full
heart,
nor
do
I
blush
to
turn
back
with
tearful
eyes;
I'm
not
leaving
a
foreign
land,
nor
strangers
behind.
This
state
was
my
home,
and
its
valleys
I
leave,
its
spires
fading
from
view.
My
eyes,
heart,
and
mind
would
have
to
be
cold
to
turn
cold
on
you,
dear
Alabama!"
Few
people
there
knew
what
"tête"
meant,
but
the
poem
was
still
quite
satisfying.
