Las aventuras de Tom Sawyer
Capítulo 23, Página 6
Potter's
lawyer
declined
to
question
him.
The
audience's
faces
began
to
show
annoyance.
Did
this
lawyer
intend
to
throw
away
his
client's
life
without
a
fight?
Several
witnesses
testified
about
Potter's
guilty
behavior
when
brought
to
the
murder
scene.
They
were
allowed
to
leave
the
stand
without
being
cross-examined.
Every
detail
of
the
incriminating
events
that
took
place
in
the
graveyard
that
morning,
which
everyone
present
remembered
so
well,
was
brought
out
by
credible
witnesses,
but
none
of
them
were
cross-examined
by
Potter's
lawyer.
The
audience's
confusion
and
dissatisfaction
expressed
itself
in
murmurs,
prompting
a
rebuke
from
the
judge.
The
prosecution's
lawyer
now
said:
"By
the
oaths
of
citizens
whose
simple
word
is
beyond
doubt,
we
have
pinned
this
terrible
crime,
without
any
room
for
question,
on
the
unfortunate
prisoner
at
the
bar.
We
rest
our
case
here."
A
groan
escaped
from
poor
Potter,
and
he
buried
his
face
in
his
hands,
rocking
softly
back
and
forth,
while
a
heavy
silence
settled
over
the
courtroom.
Many
men
were
moved,
and
many
women
showed
their
compassion
through
tears.
The
defense
attorney
stood
and
said:
"Your
honor,
at
the
start
of
this
trial,
we
suggested
that
we
would
prove
our
client
committed
this
dreadful
act
while
under
the
influence
of
a
blind
and
uncontrollable
delirium
caused
by
alcohol.
We
have
changed
our
mind.
We
will
not
offer
that
defense."
[Then
to
the
clerk:]
"Call
Thomas
Sawyer!"
A
look
of
puzzled
amazement
appeared
on
every
face
in
the
room,
including
Potter’s.
Every
eye
focused
with
curious
interest
on
Tom
as
he
stood
and
took
his
place
on
the
stand.
The
boy
looked
wild
enough,
for
he
was
very
scared.
The
oath
was
given.
"Thomas
Sawyer,
where
were
you
on
the
seventeenth
of
June,
around
midnight?"
