Las aventuras de Tom Sawyer
Capítulo 3, Página 1
Tom
stood
before
Aunt
Polly,
who
was
sitting
by
an
open
window
in
a
cozy
room
that
served
as
her
bedroom,
breakfast-room,
dining-room,
and
library
all
at
once.
The
warm
summer
breeze,
the
peaceful
quiet,
the
scent
of
flowers,
and
the
gentle
hum
of
bees
had
their
effect,
and
she
was
nodding
over
her
knitting—her
only
company
was
the
cat,
asleep
in
her
lap.
Her
spectacles
were
perched
on
her
gray
head
for
safety.
She
had
assumed
Tom
had
run
off
long
ago,
and
she
was
surprised
to
see
him
boldly
place
himself
at
her
mercy
again.
He
said,
“Mayn’t
I
go
and
play
now,
aunt?”
“What,
already?
How
much
have
you
done?”
“It’s
all
done,
aunt.”
“Tom,
don’t
lie
to
me—I
can’t
stand
it.”
“I
ain’t
lying,
aunt;
it
is
all
done.”
Aunt
Polly
was
skeptical
of
such
claims.
She
went
out
to
check
for
herself;
she
would
have
been
satisfied
if
even
twenty
percent
of
Tom’s
statement
was
true.
When
she
saw
the
entire
fence
whitewashed,
not
only
once
but
with
several
layers,
and
even
a
line
added
to
the
ground,
her
amazement
was
indescribable.
She
said:
“Well,
I
never!
You
can
work
when
you
want
to,
Tom.”
Then
she
softened
the
compliment
by
adding,
“But
it’s
rare
you’re
in
the
mood,
I
must
say.
Well,
go
on
and
play;
but
make
sure
you’re
back
sometime
this
week,
or
I’ll
tan
you.”
She
was
so
impressed
by
his
achievement
that
she
took
him
into
the
closet
and
chose
a
nice
apple
for
him,
along
with
a
lecture
on
how
a
treat
tastes
better
when
earned
through
good
effort.
And
while
she
ended
with
a
happy
biblical
flourish,
he
“hooked”
a
doughnut.
