Las aventuras de Tom Sawyer
Capítulo 9, Página 7
“Yes,
and
you
did
more
than
that,”
said
Injun
Joe,
moving
closer
to
the
doctor,
who
was
now
standing.
“Five
years
ago,
you
drove
me
away
from
your
father’s
kitchen
one
night
when
I
came
to
ask
for
food,
saying
I
wasn’t
there
for
any
good;
and
when
I
swore
I’d
get
even
with
you
if
it
took
a
hundred
years,
your
father
had
me
jailed
for
being
a
vagrant.
Did
you
think
I’d
forget?
The
Injun
blood
isn’t
in
me
for
nothing.
And
now
I’ve
got
you,
and
you’ve
got
to
settle,
you
know!”
He
was
threatening
the
doctor,
his
fist
in
his
face,
by
now.
The
doctor
suddenly
struck
out
and
knocked
the
ruffian
to
the
ground.
Potter
dropped
his
knife
and
exclaimed:
"Hey,
don't
you
hit
my
friend!"
In
the
next
moment,
he
was
wrestling
with
the
doctor,
both
struggling
fiercely,
trampling
the
grass
and
digging
into
the
ground
with
their
feet.
Injun
Joe
jumped
up,
eyes
blazing
with
anger,
grabbed
Potter's
knife,
and
moved
stealthily,
like
a
cat,
around
the
fighters,
waiting
for
a
chance.
Suddenly,
the
doctor
broke
free,
grabbed
the
heavy
headboard
from
Williams'
grave,
and
knocked
Potter
to
the
ground
with
it.
At
that
moment,
the
half-breed
saw
his
opportunity
and
plunged
the
knife
deep
into
the
young
man's
chest.
He
staggered
and
fell
partly
on
Potter,
covering
him
in
blood.
Just
then,
the
clouds
covered
the
horrific
scene,
and
the
two
terrified
boys
ran
away
into
the
darkness.
Soon,
when
the
moon
reappeared,
Injun
Joe
stood
over
the
two
bodies,
looking
at
them.
The
doctor
murmured
something
unintelligible,
gasped
a
few
times,
and
then
was
silent.
The
half-breed
muttered:
"That's
settled—damn
you."
Then
he
robbed
the
body.
After
that,
he
placed
the
deadly
knife
in
Potter's
open
right
hand
and
sat
on
the
broken
coffin.
Three,
four,
five
minutes
passed,
and
then
Potter
began
to
move
and
groan.
His
hand
closed
around
the
knife;
he
raised
it,
looked
at
it,
and
let
it
drop
with
a
shiver.
Then
he
sat
up,
pushed
the
body
away
from
him,
and
looked
around
in
confusion.
His
eyes
met
Joe’s.
"Lord,
what
happened,
Joe?"
he
asked.
"It's
a
dirty
business,"
said
Joe,
not
moving.
"Why
did
you
do
it?"
