city,
I
tried
to
work
with
stocks,
then
I
fell
asleep
in
my
chair.
Just
before
noon,
the
phone
woke
me,
and
I
started
up,
sweating.
It
was
Jordan
Baker;
she
often
called
me
at
this
time
because
she
moved
between
hotels
and
clubs
and
was
hard
to
find
otherwise.
Usually,
her
voice
was
fresh
and
cool,
but
today
it
was
harsh
and
dry.
“I’ve
left
Daisy’s
house,”
she
said.
“I’m
at
Hempstead,
and
I’m
going
to
Southampton
this
afternoon.”
Maybe
it
was
smart
to
leave
Daisy’s
house,
but
it
annoyed
me,
and
her
next
words
made
me
tense.
“You
weren’t
nice
to
me
last
night.”
“How
could

mattered
