El Gran Gatsby
Capítulo 4, Página 1
On
Sunday
morning,
while
church
bells
rang
in
the
villages
along
the
shore,
many
people
returned
to
Gatsby’s
house.
They
laughed
and
enjoyed
themselves
on
his
lawn.
“He’s
a
bootlegger,”
said
the
young
ladies
as
they
moved
between
his
cocktails
and
his
flowers.
“Once,
he
killed
a
man
who
found
out
he
was
related
to
Von
Hindenburg
and
the
devil.
Pass
me
a
rose,
honey,
and
pour
me
one
last
drop
into
that
crystal
glass.”
Once,
I
wrote
down
the
names
of
those
who
came
to
Gatsby’s
house
that
summer
on
an
empty
timetable.
It’s
an
old
timetable
now,
falling
apart,
and
titled
“This
schedule
in
effect
July
5th,
1922.”
But
I
can
still
read
the
faded
names,
and
they
give
a
clearer
idea
than
my
general
thoughts
of
those
who
enjoyed
Gatsby’s
generosity
without
knowing
anything
about
him.
From
East
Egg
came
the
Chester
Beckers,
the
Leeches,
and
a
man
named
Bunsen,
whom
I
knew
at
Yale,
and
Doctor
Webster
Civet,
who
drowned
last
summer
in
Maine.
There
were
the
Hornbeams,
the
Willie
Voltaires,
and
a
whole
family
named
Blackbuck,
who
always
gathered
in
a
corner
and
looked
down
on
anyone
who
came
near.
The
Ismays
and
the
Chrysties
came
too
(or
rather
Hubert
Auerbach
and
Mr.
Chrystie’s
wife),
and
Edgar
Beaver,
whose
hair,
they
say,
turned
white
one
winter
afternoon
for
no
reason.
I
remember
Clarence
Endive
from
East
Egg.
He
came
only
once,
wearing
white
knickerbockers,
and
fought
with
a
bum
named
Etty
in
the
garden.
From
farther
out
on
the
Island
came
the
Cheadles,
the
O.
R.
P.
Schraeders,
the
Stonewall
Jackson
Abrams
of
Georgia,
the
Fishguards,
and
the
Ripley
Snells.
Snell
was
there
three
days
before
he
went
to
jail,
so
drunk
on
the
gravel
drive
that
Mrs.
Ulysses
Swett’s
car
ran
over
his
right
hand.
The
Dancies
came
too,
and
S.
B.
Whitebait,
who
was
over
sixty,
Maurice
A.
Flink,
the
Hammerheads,
and
Beluga
the
tobacco
importer,
and
Beluga’s
girls.
From
West
Egg
came
the
Poles,
the
Mulreadys,
Cecil
Roebuck,
Cecil
Schoen,
Gulick
the
State
senator,
and
Newton
Orchid,
who
controlled
Films
Par
Excellence.
There
were
Eckhaust,
Clyde
Cohen,
Don
S.
Schwartz
(the
son),
and
Arthur
McCarty,
all
connected
with
the
movies
somehow.
The
Catlips,
the
Bembergs,
G.
Earl
Muldoon,
brother
to
that
Muldoon
who
later
strangled
his
wife,
came
too.
Da
Fontano
the
promoter
was
there,
along
with
Ed
Legros,
James
B.
(“Rot-Gut”)
Ferret,
the
De
Jongs,
and
Ernest
Lilly—they
came
to
gamble,
and
when
Ferret
wandered
into
the
garden,
it
meant
he
was
broke,
and
Associated
Traction
would
have
to
do
well
the
next
day.
