El Gran Gatsby
Capítulo 7, Página 49
"That
drugstore
thing
was
just
small
change,"
Tom
said
slowly,
"but
you’re
involved
in
something
now
that
Walter
is
scared
to
tell
me
about."
I
looked
at
Daisy,
who
was
staring
fearfully
between
Gatsby
and
her
husband,
and
at
Jordan,
who
was
balancing
an
invisible
object
on
her
chin.
Then
I
turned
back
to
Gatsby
and
was
shocked
by
his
expression.
He
looked—this
is
said
with
all
disdain
for
the
rumors
about
him—as
if
he
had
"killed
a
man."
For
a
moment,
his
face
seemed
to
fit
that
wild
description.
The
look
passed,
and
he
started
talking
to
Daisy
excitedly,
denying
everything,
defending
his
reputation
against
accusations
that
hadn’t
been
spoken.
But
with
each
word,
she
withdrew
further
into
herself,
so
he
stopped,
and
only
his
dead
dream
kept
fighting
as
the
afternoon
faded,
trying
to
reach
something
that
was
no
longer
there,
struggling
sadly
but
without
despair
towards
that
lost
voice
across
the
room.
The
voice
begged
to
leave
again.
"Please,
Tom!
I
can’t
take
this
anymore."
Her
frightened
eyes
showed
that
whatever
intentions
or
courage
she
had
were
completely
gone.
