El Gran Gatsby
Capítulo 1, Página 25
“I
forgot
to
ask
you
something,
and
it’s
important.
We
heard
you
were
engaged
to
a
girl
out
West.”
“That’s
right,”
Tom
confirmed
kindly.
“We
heard
you
were
engaged.”
“It’s
a
lie.
I’m
too
poor.”
“But
we
heard
it,”
Daisy
insisted,
surprising
me
as
she
opened
up
again
in
a
flower-like
way.
“We
heard
it
from
three
people,
so
it
must
be
true.”
Of
course,
I
knew
what
they
were
talking
about,
but
I
wasn’t
even
vaguely
engaged.
The
fact
that
gossip
had
announced
it
was
one
of
the
reasons
I
had
come
East.
You
can’t
stop
seeing
an
old
friend
because
of
rumors,
and
I
had
no
intention
of
being
pushed
into
marriage
by
them.
Their
interest
touched
me
and
made
them
seem
less
distantly
wealthy—still,
I
felt
confused
and
a
bit
disgusted
as
I
drove
away.
It
seemed
to
me
that
Daisy
should
rush
out
of
the
house,
child
in
arms—but
apparently,
she
had
no
such
plans.
As
for
Tom,
the
fact
that
he
“had
some
woman
in
New
York”
was
less
surprising
than
his
being
troubled
by
a
book.
Something
was
making
him
nibble
at
the
edge
of
old
ideas
as
if
his
strong
physical
egotism
no
longer
satisfied
his
demanding
heart.
