El Gran Gatsby
Capítulo 2, Página 20
"Crazy
about
him!"
Myrtle
exclaimed
incredulously.
"Who
said
I
was
crazy
about
him?
I
was
never
any
more
crazy
about
him
than
I
am
about
that
man
there."
She
suddenly
pointed
at
me,
and
everyone
looked
at
me
accusingly.
I
tried
to
show
with
my
expression
that
I
expected
no
affection.
"The
only
crazy
thing
I
did
was
marry
him.
I
realized
immediately
I
made
a
mistake.
He
borrowed
someone’s
best
suit
for
the
wedding
and
never
told
me.
The
man
came
for
it
one
day
when
he
was
out:
‘Oh,
is
that
your
suit?’
I
asked.
‘This
is
the
first
I’ve
heard
about
it.’
But
I
gave
it
to
him,
then
lay
down
and
cried
all
afternoon."
"She
really
should
leave
him,"
Catherine
resumed
to
me.
"They've
lived
over
that
garage
for
eleven
years.
Tom's
the
first
sweetheart
she's
ever
had."
The
whisky
bottle—a
second
one—was
now
in
constant
demand
by
everyone
except
Catherine,
who
"felt
just
as
good
on
nothing
at
all."
Tom
rang
for
the
janitor
and
sent
him
for
some
celebrated
sandwiches,
which
were
a
full
meal
themselves.
I
wanted
to
leave
and
walk
eastward
toward
the
park
through
the
soft
twilight,
but
each
attempt
was
thwarted
by
a
wild
argument
that
pulled
me
back
into
my
chair.
Yet,
high
above
the
city,
our
line
of
yellow
windows
must
have
added
their
share
of
human
secrecy
to
the
casual
observer
in
the
darkening
streets,
and
I
saw
him
too,
looking
up
and
wondering.
I
was
both
inside
and
outside,
enchanted
and
repelled
by
the
endless
variety
of
life.
Myrtle
moved
her
chair
close
to
mine,
and
suddenly
her
warm
breath
told
me
the
story
of
how
she
first
met
Tom.
