El Gran Gatsby
Capítulo 3, Página 21
"Good
night."
"Good
night."
He
smiled—and
suddenly
it
seemed
significant
to
have
been
among
the
last
to
leave,
as
if
he
had
wanted
it
that
way
all
along.
"Good
night,
old
sport...
Good
night."
But
as
I
walked
down
the
steps,
I
saw
the
evening
wasn't
quite
over.
Fifty
feet
from
the
door,
a
dozen
headlights
lit
up
a
strange
and
chaotic
scene.
In
the
ditch
beside
the
road,
right
side
up
but
missing
a
wheel,
was
a
new
coupé
that
had
just
left
Gatsby's
drive.
The
sharp
corner
of
a
wall
explained
the
wheel's
removal,
which
was
now
drawing
considerable
attention
from
several
curious
chauffeurs.
However,
as
they
had
left
their
cars
blocking
the
road,
a
harsh,
discordant
noise
from
those
behind
had
been
audible
for
some
time,
adding
to
the
already
chaotic
scene.
A
man
in
a
long
coat
had
gotten
off
the
wrecked
car
and
now
stood
in
the
middle
of
the
road,
looking
from
the
car
to
the
tire
and
then
at
the
onlookers
with
a
pleasant,
puzzled
expression.
"See!"
he
exclaimed.
"It
went
into
the
ditch."
The
fact
was
incredibly
surprising
to
him,
and
I
first
noticed
his
unusual
sense
of
wonder,
then
recognized
the
man—it
was
the
former
guest
of
Gatsby’s
library.
