El Gran Gatsby
Capítulo 7, Página 49
"That
drugstore
thing
was
just
minor,"
Tom
said
slowly,
"but
you've
got
something
big
now
that
Walter's
scared
to
tell
me
about."
I
looked
at
Daisy,
who
was
staring
fearfully
between
Gatsby
and
her
husband,
and
at
Jordan,
who
was
balancing
an
invisible
object
on
her
chin.
Then
I
turned
back
to
Gatsby—and
was
surprised
by
his
expression.
He
looked—as
if
he
had
"killed
a
man."
For
a
moment,
his
face
could
be
described
in
that
dramatic
way.
The
look
passed,
and
he
began
speaking
excitedly
to
Daisy,
denying
everything,
defending
his
name
against
unspoken
accusations.
But
with
every
word,
she
retreated
further
into
herself,
so
he
stopped,
and
only
the
dead
dream
continued,
trying
to
reach
what
was
no
longer
there,
struggling
sadly,
yet
without
despair,
toward
that
lost
voice
across
the
room.
The
voice
begged
again
to
leave.
"Please,
Tom!
I
can't
take
this
anymore."
Her
frightened
eyes
showed
that
whatever
intentions
or
courage
she
had
were
completely
gone.
