El Maravilloso Mago de Oz
Capítulo 1, Página 1
Dorothy
lived
on
the
wide
Kansas
prairies
with
Uncle
Henry,
a
farmer,
and
Aunt
Em,
his
wife.
Their
house
was
small
because
the
wood
to
build
it
had
to
be
brought
from
far
away
by
wagon.
The
house
had
four
walls,
a
floor,
and
a
roof,
making
just
one
room.
Inside,
there
was
an
old
cookstove,
a
cupboard
for
dishes,
a
table,
a
few
chairs,
and
two
beds.
Uncle
Henry
and
Aunt
Em
had
a
big
bed
in
one
corner,
and
Dorothy
had
a
small
bed
in
another.
There
was
no
attic
or
basement,
only
a
small
hole
in
the
ground
called
a
cyclone
cellar
for
protection
during
storms.
It
was
reached
by
a
trap
door
in
the
floor,
with
a
ladder
leading
down
into
the
dark
hole.
When
Dorothy
stood
in
the
doorway,
she
saw
nothing
but
the
endless
gray
prairie
stretching
to
the
horizon.
There
were
no
trees
or
houses
to
break
the
view.
The
sun
had
baked
the
land
into
a
hard,
cracked
surface.
Even
the
grass
wasn't
green,
as
the
sun
had
burned
it
until
it
was
gray
like
everything
else.
The
house
had
been
painted
once,
but
the
sun
and
rain
had
worn
the
paint
away,
leaving
the
house
dull
and
gray.
Aunt
Em
was
once
a
young,
pretty
woman
when
she
came
to
live
there.
But
the
sun
and
wind
had
changed
her.
Her
eyes
lost
their
sparkle
and
turned
gray,
and
her
cheeks
and
lips
became
gray
too.
She
was
thin
and
never
smiled
anymore.
When
Dorothy,
who
was
an
orphan,
first
arrived,
Aunt
Em
was
so
surprised
by
her
laughter
that
she
would
scream
and
hold
her
heart
whenever
she
heard
it.
She
still
looked
at
Dorothy
in
wonder,
not
understanding
how
the
girl
could
find
anything
to
laugh
about.
Uncle
Henry
never
laughed.
He
worked
hard
from
morning
till
night
and
didn't
know
what
joy
was.
He
was
gray
too,
from
his
beard
to
his
boots,
and
he
looked
serious
and
rarely
spoke.
It
was
Toto
who
made
Dorothy
laugh,
saving
her
from
becoming
as
gray
as
her
surroundings.
Toto
was
not
gray;
he
was
a
little
black
dog
with
long
silky
hair
and
small,
happy
eyes.
Toto
played
all
day,
and
Dorothy
played
with
him
and
loved
him
very
much.
Today,
though,
they
weren't
playing.
Uncle
Henry
sat
on
the
doorstep,
looking
worriedly
at
the
sky,
which
was
grayer
than
usual.
Dorothy
stood
in
the
door
with
Toto
in
her
arms,
also
watching
the
sky.
Aunt
Em
was
washing
the
dishes.
