BY
THE
SEA.
I
started
early,
took
my
dog,
And
went
to
the
sea;
The
mermaids
in
the
basement
Came
out
to
see
me,
And
ships
in
the
upper
floor
Reached
out
hands,
Thinking
me
a
mouse
On
the
sands.
But
no
man
moved
me
till
the
tide
Went
past
my
shoe,
And
past
my
apron
and
my
belt,
And
past
my
dress
too,
And
made
as
he
would
eat
me
up
As
all
as
a
dew
On
a
flower's
sleeve
—
And
then
I
moved
too.
And
he
—
he
followed
close;
I
felt
his
silver
heel
On
my
ankle,
—
then
my
shoes
Would
fill
with
pearl.
Until
we
met
the
town,
No
man
he
seemed
to
know;
And
bowing
with
a
look
At
me,
the
sea
went
back.
