XXIII.
IN
THE
GARDEN.
A
bird
came
down
the
walk:
He
did
not
know
I
saw;
He
bit
a
worm
in
halves
And
ate
it,
raw.
And
then
he
drank
a
dew
From
a
nearby
grass,
And
then
hopped
to
the
wall
To
let
a
beetle
pass.
He
looked
with
quick
eyes
That
moved
all
around,
—
They
looked
like
scared
beads,
I
thought;
He
moved
his
soft
head
Like
one
in
danger;
careful,
I
offered
him
a
crumb,
And
he
spread
his
feathers
And
flew
softly
home
Than
oars
divide
the
ocean,
Too
silver
for
a
seam,
Or
butterflies,
off
banks
of
noon,
Leap,
splashless,
as
they
swim.
