XXIV.
THE
SNAKE.
A
narrow
fellow
in
the
grass
Sometimes
rides;
You
may
have
met
him,
—
did
you
not,
His
notice
is
sudden.
The
grass
parts
as
with
a
comb,
A
spotted
shaft
is
seen;
And
then
it
closes
at
your
feet
And
opens
further
on.
He
likes
a
wet
acre,
A
floor
too
cool
for
corn.
Yet
when
a
child,
and
barefoot,
I
saw
him
more
than
once,
at
morn,
I
thought
I
saw
a
whip
Unbraiding
in
the
sun,
But
when
I
tried
to
grab
it,
It
wrinkled,
then
was
gone.
I
know
some
of
nature's
people,
And
they
know
me
too;
I
feel
a
friendly
warmth
For
them
and
what
they
do.
But
I
never
met
this
one,
With
friends
or
alone,
Without
feeling
tight
breath
And
cold
down
to
my
bones.
