XXV.
THE
MUSHROOM.
The
mushroom
is
the
elf
of
plants,
Absent
at
night;
By
morning
in
a
truffled
hut
It
appears
on
the
site
As
if
it
had
always
lingered;
Yet
its
entire
course
Is
briefer
than
a
snake's
pause,
And
swifter
than
a
weed's
force.
It's
nature's
trickster,
The
seed
of
illusion;
It
preempts
like
a
bubble,
And
vanishes
as
swiftly.
I
sense
the
grass
is
pleased
To
have
it
pause;
The
stealthy
offspring
Of
summer's
cautious
cause.
If
nature
had
a
face
to
shun,
Could
she
reject
a
son,
Had
nature
a
betrayer,
That
mushroom—it
is
the
one.
