Las aventuras de Sherlock Holmes
The Adventure of the Noble Bachelor
Capítulo 10, Página 26
"Please
do
not
apologize
to
me,"
said
Lord
St.
Simon
bitterly.
"Oh,
yes,
I
know
I
treated
you
badly.
I
should
have
talked
to
you
before
I
left.
But
I
was
confused,
and
when
I
saw
Frank
again,
I
did
not
know
what
to
do.
I
am
surprised
I
did
not
faint
right
there
at
the
altar."
"Maybe,
Mrs.
Moulton,
you
want
my
friend
and
me
to
leave
the
room
while
you
explain?"
"If
I
can
say
something,"
said
the
strange
man,
"we
have
had
too
much
secrecy
already.
I
want
everyone
to
know
the
truth."
He
was
a
small,
wiry
man
with
a
sharp
face.
"Then
I
will
tell
our
story
now,"
said
the
lady.
"Frank
and
I
met
in
'84
at
McQuire's
camp
near
the
Rockies.
My
father
worked
there.
Frank
and
I
were
engaged,
but
then
my
father
found
gold
and
became
rich.
Frank's
claim
failed,
so
my
father
did
not
want
us
to
be
engaged
anymore.
He
took
me
to
San
Francisco.
Frank
followed
me
there
without
my
father
knowing.
We
made
a
plan.
Frank
said
he
would
make
money
and
come
back
for
me.
I
promised
to
wait
for
him
and
not
marry
anyone
else.
'Why
not
marry
now?'
he
asked.
'Then
I
will
be
sure
of
you.'
We
talked,
and
he
had
a
clergyman
ready,
so
we
got
married.
Then
Frank
left
to
find
his
fortune,
and
I
went
back
to
my
father."
"The
next
I
heard,
Frank
was
in
Montana,
then
Arizona,
then
New
Mexico.
Then
I
read
a
newspaper
story.
It
said
a
miners'
camp
was
attacked
by
Apache
Indians,
and
Frank's
name
was
among
the
dead.
I
fainted
and
was
very
sick
for
months.
My
father
took
me
to
many
doctors.
No
news
came
for
over
a
year,
so
I
thought
Frank
was
dead.
Then
Lord
St.
Simon
came
to
San
Francisco,
and
we
went
to
London.
A
marriage
was
arranged,
and
my
father
was
happy.
But
I
knew
no
man
could
take
Frank's
place
in
my
heart."
"Still,
if
I
had
married
Lord
St.
Simon,
I
would
have
done
my
duty.
We
cannot
choose
our
love,
but
we
can
choose
our
actions.
I
went
to
the
altar
ready
to
be
a
good
wife.
But
when
I
looked
back,
I
saw
Frank
in
the
first
pew.
I
thought
he
was
a
ghost,
but
he
was
there,
looking
at
me.
I
almost
fainted.
Everything
was
spinning,
and
the
clergyman's
words
were
like
a
bee
buzzing.
I
did
not
know
what
to
do.
Should
I
stop
the
service?
I
looked
at
Frank
again,
and
he
put
a
finger
to
his
lips
to
tell
me
to
stay
quiet.
Then
he
wrote
a
note.
As
I
passed,
I
dropped
my
flowers,
and
he
gave
me
the
note
back
with
them.
It
asked
me
to
join
him
when
he
signaled.
I
knew
my
first
duty
was
now
to
him."
"When
I
got
back,
I
told
my
maid,
who
knew
him
from
California.
I
asked
her
to
pack
a
few
things
and
keep
quiet.
I
should
have
spoken
to
Lord
St.
Simon,
but
it
was
too
hard
in
front
of
his
mother
and
all
those
people.
I
decided
to
run
away
and
explain
later.
I
saw
Frank
out
the
window.
He
waved,
and
I
followed
him.
A
woman
talked
to
me
about
Lord
St.
Simon.
I
heard
she
said
he
had
a
secret,
too.
But
I
got
away
and
caught
up
with
Frank.
We
took
a
cab
to
some
lodgings
he
had
in
Gordon
Square.
That
was
my
real
wedding
after
all
those
years.
Frank
had
been
a
prisoner
with
the
Apaches,
escaped,
and
came
to
San
Francisco.
He
found
I
thought
he
was
dead
and
went
to
England
to
find
me.
He
saw
me
on
the
morning
of
my
second
wedding."
