Las aventuras de Sherlock Holmes
The Adventure of the Copper Beeches
Capítulo 12, Página 18
"This
made
me
curious,
so
when
I
went
for
a
walk
with
the
child,
I
walked
to
where
I
could
see
the
windows
of
that
part
of
the
house.
There
were
four
in
a
row;
three
were
dirty,
and
the
fourth
had
shutters.
They
all
looked
deserted.
As
I
walked,
looking
at
them,
Mr.
Rucastle
came
out,
looking
cheerful
as
always."
"Ah!"
he
said,
"don't
think
me
rude
if
I
passed
you
without
a
word,
my
dear
young
lady.
I
was
busy
with
work."
I
told
him
I
wasn't
offended.
"By
the
way,"
I
said,
"you
have
some
spare
rooms
up
there,
and
one
has
shutters."
"He
looked
surprised
and
a
little
startled
by
my
comment."
"Photography
is
a
hobby
of
mine,"
he
said.
"I
made
my
dark
room
up
there.
But,
dear
me!
What
an
observant
young
lady
we
have
here.
Who
would
have
believed
it?"
He
spoke
jokingly,
but
his
eyes
showed
no
humor.
I
saw
suspicion
and
annoyance.
"Well,
Mr.
Holmes,
when
I
knew
there
was
something
about
those
rooms
I
wasn't
supposed
to
know,
I
was
eager
to
see
them.
It
wasn't
just
curiosity,
though
I
have
that.
It
felt
like
a
duty,
thinking
some
good
might
come
from
going
there.
They
talk
about
woman's
instinct;
maybe
it
was
that.
Anyway,
I
was
watching
for
a
chance
to
go
through
the
forbidden
door."
"The
chance
came
yesterday.
Besides
Mr.
Rucastle,
Toller
and
his
wife
also
worked
in
those
rooms,
and
I
once
saw
him
carrying
a
large
black
bag
through
the
door.
Recently,
he
has
been
drinking
a
lot,
and
yesterday
he
was
very
drunk.
When
I
went
upstairs,
the
key
was
in
the
door.
I'm
sure
he
left
it
there.
Mr.
and
Mrs.
Rucastle
were
downstairs,
and
the
child
was
with
them,
so
I
had
a
perfect
chance.
I
gently
turned
the
key,
opened
the
door,
and
went
in."
"There
was
a
little
hallway
in
front
of
me,
with
no
paper
or
carpet,
which
turned
at
a
right
angle.
Around
the
corner
were
three
doors
in
a
line;
the
first
and
third
were
open.
They
led
to
empty,
dusty
rooms,
with
two
windows
in
one
and
one
in
the
other,
so
dirty
the
evening
light
barely
came
through.
The
middle
door
was
closed,
with
a
bar
from
a
bed
fastened
across
it,
padlocked
to
a
ring
in
the
wall,
and
tied
with
strong
cord.
The
door
was
locked,
and
the
key
wasn't
there.
This
door
matched
the
shuttered
window
outside,
but
I
could
see
light
under
it,
so
there
was
a
skylight
above.
As
I
stood
there
looking
at
the
door,
wondering
about
its
secret,
I
suddenly
heard
steps
inside
and
saw
a
shadow
moving
against
the
light
from
under
the
door.
A
wild
fear
rose
in
me,
Mr.
Holmes.
My
nerves
failed,
and
I
ran,
as
if
something
dreadful
was
chasing
me.
I
ran
down
the
hallway,
through
the
door,
and
into
Mr.
Rucastle's
arms."
