all
the
problems
my
friend,
Mr.
Sherlock
Holmes,
solved,
I
introduced
only
two
to
him.
One
was
about
Mr.
Hatherley’s
thumb,
and
the
other
was
about
Colonel
Warburton’s
madness.
The
latter
was
interesting,
but
the
first
was
strange
and
dramatic.
Newspapers
told
the
story,
but
seeing
the
facts
unfold
was
more
exciting.
The
events
made
a
deep
impression
on
me,
and
even
after
two
years,
I
still
remember
them
well.
It
happened
in
the
summer
of
'89,
not
long
after
I
got
married.
I
returned
to
my
work
and
left
Holmes
in
Baker
Street,
but
I
visited
him
often.
My
practice
grew,
and
I
lived
near
Paddington
Station,
so
I
got
some
patients
from
there.
One
patient,
whom
I
helped
a
lot,
always
spoke
well
of
me
and
sent
me
more
patients.
One
morning,
before
seven
o'clock,
the
maid
woke
me.
She
said
two
men
from
Paddington
were
waiting
in
the
consulting-room.
I
dressed
quickly
because
railway
cases
were
often
serious
and
hurried
downstairs.
As
I
went
down,
my
old
friend,
the
guard,
came
out
of
the
room
and
closed
the
door
behind
him.
“I’ve
got
him
here,”
he
whispered,
pointing
with
his
thumb.
“He’s
all
right.”
“What
is
it?”
I
asked.
His
manner
suggested
something
strange
was
in
my
room.
“It’s
a
new
patient,”
he
whispered.
“I
brought
him
myself
so
he
couldn’t
leave.
There
he
is,
safe
and
sound.
I
must
go
now,
Doctor;
I
have
my
duties,
just
like
you.”
And
off
he
went,
without
giving
me
time
to
thank
him.
I
entered
my
consulting-room
and
saw
a
gentleman
sitting
by
the
table.
He
wore
a
suit
of
heather
tweed
and
had
a
soft
cloth
cap
on
my
books.
One
hand
had
a
handkerchief
with
bloodstains.
He
was
young,
about
twenty-five,
with
a
strong
face,
but
he
looked
very
pale
and
upset.
“I
am
sorry
to
bother
you
so
early,
Doctor,”
he
said.
“I
had
a
serious
accident
last
night.
I
came
by
train
this
morning,
and
a
kind
man
brought
me
here.
I
gave
the
maid
my
card,
but
she
left
it
on
the
table.”
