Las aventuras de Sherlock Holmes
The Adventure of the Engineer's Thumb
Capítulo 9, Página 2
I
picked
up
the
card.
“Mr.
Victor
Hatherley,
hydraulic
engineer,
16A,
Victoria
Street
(3rd
floor).”
That
was
his
name
and
address.
“I
am
sorry
you
waited,”
I
said,
sitting
down.
“You
came
after
a
night
journey,
which
is
tiring.”
“Oh,
my
night
was
not
boring,”
he
said
and
laughed.
He
laughed
loudly,
leaning
back
and
shaking.
His
laugh
worried
me.
“Stop
it!”
I
cried.
“Calm
down!”
I
poured
some
water.
It
was
no
use.
He
had
a
hysterical
outburst,
which
happens
when
a
strong
person
faces
a
crisis.
Soon
he
calmed
down,
looking
pale
and
tired.
“I
made
a
fool
of
myself,”
he
gasped.
“Not
at
all.
Drink
this.”
I
added
brandy
to
the
water,
and
color
returned
to
his
cheeks.
“That’s
better!”
he
said.
“Now,
Doctor,
please
look
at
my
thumb,
or
where
it
used
to
be.”
He
unwrapped
the
handkerchief
and
showed
his
hand.
It
shocked
me.
There
were
four
fingers
and
a
red,
spongy
area
where
the
thumb
should
be.
It
looked
hacked
or
torn
out.
