Las aventuras de Sherlock Holmes
The Adventure of the Engineer's Thumb
Capítulo 9, Página 6
"Your
experience
was
unusual,
Mr.
Hatherley,"
Holmes
said.
"Please,
lie
down
and
feel
at
home.
Tell
us
your
story.
Stop
if
you
get
tired
and
drink
a
little
to
keep
your
strength."
"Thank
you,"
said
Mr.
Hatherley.
"I
feel
much
better
since
the
doctor
helped
me,
and
your
breakfast
was
great.
I
will
take
little
of
your
time
and
start
my
story
now."
Holmes
sat
in
his
big
armchair,
looking
tired
but
interested.
I
sat
across
from
him,
and
we
listened
quietly
to
the
strange
story
our
visitor
told
us.
"I
am
an
orphan
and
a
bachelor,"
he
began.
"I
live
alone
in
London.
I
am
a
hydraulic
engineer
and
worked
for
Venner
&
Matheson
in
Greenwich
for
seven
years.
Two
years
ago,
I
started
my
own
business
in
Victoria
Street
after
my
father
died
and
left
me
some
money."
"Starting
a
business
is
hard
for
everyone,
but
for
me,
it
was
very
hard.
In
two
years,
I
had
only
three
consultations
and
one
small
job.
I
earned
just
£27
10s.
Every
day,
I
waited
in
my
office
from
nine
to
four,
and
I
started
to
feel
hopeless."
"Yesterday,
just
as
I
was
about
to
leave,
my
clerk
said
a
gentleman
wanted
to
see
me.
He
gave
me
a
card
with
the
name
'Colonel
Lysander
Stark.'
The
colonel
came
in,
a
very
thin
man,
more
than
middle
size.
His
face
was
sharp,
and
his
skin
was
tight
over
his
bones.
But
he
seemed
healthy,
with
bright
eyes
and
quick
steps.
He
dressed
plainly
but
neatly,
and
I
guessed
he
was
closer
to
forty
than
thirty."
"'Mr.
Hatherley?'
he
said
with
a
slight
German
accent.
'You
are
recommended
to
me
as
skilled
and
discreet,
able
to
keep
a
secret.'"
I
felt
pleased
and
asked,
"Who
gave
me
such
a
good
